Shawn Paper is an American film and television editor. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 2016 for editing the Veep episode "Mother" and for a Children's & Family Emmy Award in 2022 for his work on Sweet Tooth, shared with Michael Berenbaum.[1][2] He also received an American Cinema Editors Eddie Award nomination for "Mother" in 2017.[3]

Paper's television credits include Girls, Parks and Recreation, Veep, What We Do in the Shadows, Sweet Tooth, and Platonic.[4][5][6][2][7] His feature-film work includes That Awkward Moment (2014), The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020), and Love, Brooklyn (2025).[8][9][10]

Career

Paper attended Bennington College, where he studied theater and literature.[4][11] In a 2025 interview with Filmmaker, he said that he began working in post-production during the transition to digital editing in the mid-1990s. He described an early apprenticeship assisting veteran editor Fred Berger on Dallas reunion television films using the Lightworks editing system.[11]

Television

Paper worked as an editor on television comedies including Parks and Recreation and Girls before editing three episodes of the fifth season of HBO's Veep.[4][5] His editing of the 2016 episode "Mother" received a nomination for Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series at the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards.[1][12] The episode also received a 2017 American Cinema Editors nomination for Best Edited Half-Hour Series.[3]

In 2019, Paper edited episodes of the first season of the FX comedy What We Do in the Shadows.[6] He later worked on the first season of the Netflix fantasy drama Sweet Tooth.[2] Paper and Michael Berenbaum were nominated at the inaugural Children's & Family Emmy Awards for Outstanding Editing for a Single Camera Program for the series.[2]

His subsequent television work has included Platonic, for which he edited the first-season episode "Partner's Retreat".[7]

Film

Paper co-edited the 2014 comedy-drama That Awkward Moment, directed by Tom Gormican, with Greg Tillman.[8][13]

Paper edited Natalie Krinsky's 2020 feature The Broken Hearts Gallery. In a Variety feature on the film's craft departments, Paper discussed restructuring and compressing the film's opening to accelerate the story while retaining its character and comedy beats.[9] In a separate interview, he described incorporating material from improvisation and reorganizing scenes and montages during post-production.[14]

Paper subsequently edited Love, Brooklyn, the feature directorial debut of Rachael Abigail Holder. The film premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.[10] In a Filmmaker interview, Paper described restructuring the opening and experimenting with chronology after executive producer Steven Soderbergh encouraged the filmmakers to draw on the editing approach of Soderbergh's film The Limey.[11]
