Rajmata Shashi Prabha Devi (17 February 1941 – 24 October 2020) was an Indian politician and the queen consort of the former princely state of Kawardha, located in present-day Kabirdham district, Chhattisgarh. She was the first woman to serve as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Kawardha constituency.[1]

Early Life and Marriage

[edit]

Shashi Prabha Devi was born on 17 February 1941 into the royal family of Mallapur (Sitapur district) in Uttar Pradesh, as the daughter of Raja Ganga Pratap Singh.[2] She married Maharaja Vishwaraj Pratap Singh, the 11th titular ruler of Kawardha State. Following her marriage, she became highly revered by the local public as the Queen and later as the Rajmata (Queen Mother). She was the mother of the prominent local leader and former MLA, Raja Yogeshwar Raj Singh.

Political Career

[edit]

Rajmata Shashi Prabha Devi entered active politics to champion rural development and women's empowerment in the Kawardha region:

  • **First Tenure (1977):** She contested her maiden assembly election in 1977 on an Akhil Bharatiya Ram Rajya Pradesh (RRP) ticket and won, becoming the first woman to represent the Kawardha Legislative Assembly constituency.[3]
  • **Second Tenure (1980):** She subsequently joined the Indian National Congress (INC) and successfully retained her seat in the 1980 state assembly elections. During her legislative tenures, she contributed significantly toward expanding local education, healthcare, and rural road connectivity.

Death

[edit]

After a prolonged illness, she passed away on 24 October 2020 at a private hospital in Raipur at the age of 79.[4] Her demise was widely mourned across the political and social spectrum of Chhattisgarh, with state leaders paying rich tributes to her legacy.
