Conception and development
[edit]Shanks was present since the first draft of the one-shot Romance Dawn , published in the 1996 Summer Special of the Shonen Jump magazine in this version of the story he was almost identical to the current one, both in physical appearance and character. The events of his meeting with Luffy remain practically unchanged, including the loss of his arm (caused by a shark rather than a sea monster) and the delivery of the straw hat to Luffy as a pledge of their promise.[12][13] In the second version of Romance Dawn , published directly in the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, Shanks is absent, being replaced as the protagonist's mentor by Luffy's grandfather this is because Oda, taking advantage of the smaller number of readers of the Summer Special compared to the Weekly Shōnen Jump, wanted to maintain a certain secrecy on his figure, preferring to introduce him directly in the main work.[14]
In a 2010 interview, Oda revealed that he had not initially planned for Shanks to lose his arm and that this event, which later became one of the main characteristics of the character, had been requested by the editor to make the story more exciting[15]; similarly, his appearance in Marineford was not initially planned.[16] He later stated that he intentionally made Shanks appear only a few times during the story, stating that an increase in his appearances in the manga would have signified the story entering its final stage.[17]
Biography
[edit]Shanks was born in God Valley[18] in the Western Sea[19], the son of the Knights of God 's supreme commander Saint Figurland Garling and a red-haired islander.[20]
