Comment: Does not meet the WP:GOLDENRULE - no independent source discusses the awards in sufficient depth to permit a summary. PR pieces have been included here, such at GQ, which really should not be present. Ditto IMDB. All in all a promotional piece of wording, outside WP:NPOV. ChrysGalley (talk) 10:36, 19 May 2026 (UTC)

Septimius Awards is an international film and media awards ceremony held annually in the Netherlands. The awards were founded by filmmaker and entrepreneur Jan-Willem Breure.[1][2] The awards emphasise global inclusion and are frequently referred by some media as the "Oscars of Europe" due to their international scope and high-profile attendees.[3][4]
History
[edit]The Septimius Awards ceremony was established in 2017 to reflect a broader scope of cinematic and cultural recognition.[5] The awards are named after Septimius Severus, the first black Roman emperor.[6] The trophies are golden busts of Septimius Severus The event is traditionally held at the Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam, a venue renowned for its architectural significance.[7][8][9]
Mission and Format
[edit]The Septimius Awards are distinguished by their "Continental" category structure. To ensure global representation and minimize Western cultural bias, the organization divides major categories—such as Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Film—by continent: Africa, Asia,Latin America ,North America and Oceania.[10][11][12][13] This format is designed to provide a platform where independent filmmakers and talent from the Global South can compete on an equal footing with Western productions.[7][14][15][16]

Notable honorees and attendees include: Kevin Spacey who is a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient for 2025.[17][18][19] [20] Cuba Gooding Jr. who is also a Lifetime Achievement Award recipient for 2024 and Stedman Graham, who later became the official global ambassador for the awards.[21] Tovino Thomas is a two-time winner of the Best Asian Actor category in 2023 and 2025.[22] While Iranian actress, Shohreh Aghdashloo was the Lifetime Achievement Award recipient for 2025.[23] In 2024 Nomzamo Mbatha from South Africa was honored with the Best African Actress Award for her role as Queen Nandi kaMbengi, the mother of Shaka Zulu in Shaka Ilembe. Another South African, a makeup artist and the founder of House of Queen, Queen Motatle, won the Best Hair and Makeup for her work on the same cast. [24][25] [26] [27] In 2025, Ka Whawhai Tonu a historical drama film by Michael Jonathan from New Zealand also won the award.[28] In 2025, singer and content creator from the Philippines, Donnalyn Bartolome won the Best Content Creator Award. [29][30]

[edit]Jan-Willem Breure (born September 1, 1988) is a Rwandan-Dutch filmmaker and director. Having grown up across Rwanda, Kenya, and Namibia before moving to the Netherlands, Breure's multicultural background influences the awards' focus on "Global Inclusion." Outside of the awards, he is known for directing documentaries such as Are All Men Pedophiles? ,a documentary about pedophilia hysteria and sexism against men released in 2012. In 2018 he directed the film; Do Women Have A Higher Sex Drive?. In 2025, it was announced that he would partner with UN Women for a documentary project titled United Races.[31][32]
