Seascape is a Slovenian sailboat manufacturer based in Podpeč. It was founded in 2008 by sailors Andraž Mihelin and Kristian Hajnšek. Their first boat, the Seascape 18, was based on experience they gained while competing in the Mini Transat 6.50.[2][3]

The company developed four boats under its own name: the Seascape 14, 18, 24 and 27. Groupe Beneteau acquired a majority interest in Seascape in 2018 and incorporated the boats into its First range.[4] Seascape later worked with Beneteau on the First 36 and First 30. The Seascape 18, Seascape 24, First 36 and First 30 each won a category in the European Yacht of the Year awards.[5][6][7][8]

History

[edit]

Mihelin and Hajnšek met while studying at the University of Ljubljana. Both later raced in the Mini Transat, a single-handed transatlantic race for 6.5-metre boats. They used their offshore-racing experience to develop a smaller recreational boat that could also be transported by road.[9][2] The resulting Seascape 18 was designed with French naval architect Samuel Manuard and entered production in 2008. It won the Special Yacht category of the 2010 European Yacht of the Year awards.[5]

The Seascape 27 followed the 18. The company later added the Seascape 24 and the smaller Seascape 14. The boats used racing-derived hull forms, lifting keels or daggerboards and relatively simple deck layouts.[3][10] Gigodesign, a design studio from Ljubljana, worked on the industrial and interior design of several models.[11]

The Seascape 27 received awards from the American magazines SAIL and Sailing World in 2015.[12][13] The Seascape 18 was named Sailing World's Best Recreational Racer for 2016,[14] and the Seascape 24 won awards from Yachting World, SAIL and Sailing World for 2017.[6][15][16]

Groupe Beneteau

[edit]

On 9 July 2018, Groupe Beneteau acquired 60 per cent of Seascape. The founders retained the other 40 per cent.[17] At the time, Seascape offered four models between 4.3 and 8 metres and reported revenue of €4.2 million for 2017.[17]

Later in 2018, the Seascape 14, 18, 24 and 27 became part of Beneteau's First range. Production remained with Seascape in Slovenia.[4] The Seascape 14, renamed the First 14, was named Best Daysailer by SAIL and Best Dinghy by Sailing World for 2019.[18][19]

In January 2021, Groupe Beneteau sold ten percentage points to Seascape's other shareholders. Its interest was reduced to 50 per cent and Seascape changed from exclusive to joint control.[1]

First 36 and First 30

[edit]

Seascape and Beneteau later worked together on larger boats in the First range. The First 36 was developed with naval architecture by Manuard, exterior and interior design by Lorenzo Argento and contributions from Slovenian design and engineering teams.[20] It won the Performance Yacht category of European Yacht of the Year and Sailing World's overall Boat of the Year award for 2023.[7][21]

The First 30 was launched in 2025. It won the Sailing Yacht Under 20m category at the Yacht Style Awards,[22] Norwegian Sailboat of the Year,[23] Performance Yacht of the Year at the British Yachting Awards,[24] and the Performance Cruiser category of European Yacht of the Year for 2026.[8]
