Sean Martin (also credited as F. Sean Martin or F. Sean) is a Grammy-nominated American guitarist, songwriter, record producer, and tattoo artist from Connecticut. He is best known for his tenure as lead guitarist in the metalcore band Hatebreed during the early 2000s, and has since worked across hardcore, metal, hip hop, and electronic music as a session player and producer. His credits include the bands Twitching Tongues, 100 Demons, XO Skeletons, Wear Your Wounds, and Umbra Vitae, his duo collaboration House of Blow with Daryl Palumbo, guitar and songwriting contributions to Wes Eisold's electronic music project Cold Cave, production work for rapper Cage, and guitar contributions to Kid Cudi's WZRD project.

Early life

Martin grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut, and came up through the state's hardcore and punk scenes in the 1990s, playing in local bands including Evolve, Higher Force, and Death Threat, alongside future members of 100 Demons and other Connecticut-area acts before joining Hatebreed.

Career

Hatebreed

Martin played guitar in Hatebreed from 1999 to 2009, appearing on four studio albums: Perseverance (Universal Records, 2002), one of the most commercially and critically prominent records of the band's catalog; The Rise of Brutality (Universal Records, 2003), which included the Grammy-nominated single "Live for This" (nominated for Best Metal Performance in 2005); Supremacy (Roadrunner Records, 2006); and the covers album For the Lions (Koch Records, 2009). He departed the band amicably in 2009. Years later, he returned as a guest for Hatebreed's 25th-anniversary shows, and in 2022 he rejoined the band on select dates of the "20 Years of Perseverance" anniversary tour, performing songs from the album he had originally recorded on.

XO Skeletons

While still a member of Hatebreed, Martin also played in XO Skeletons, an electronic-tinged hardcore/punk group active from roughly 2003 to 2008. The band paired Martin with vocalist Wes Eisold (American Nightmare, Some Girls, Cold Cave), Domenic "Nicky Money" Palermo (Nothing), and Chauncey Johnson. Martin handled production, programming, and songwriting for the group, which folded synths and drum machines into a hardcore base and released two EPs, including Bored By Heaven.

House of Blow

Around 2002, while Hatebreed and Glassjaw were touring together, Martin and Glassjaw/Head Automatica vocalist Daryl Palumbo bonded over a shared interest in drum machines, samplers, and hip hop production, and began collaborating as House of Blow. The project surfaced sporadically in the years that followed, posting a demo in 2006.

Cold Cave

Martin contributed guitar, bass, and co-writing to Cold Cave's 2009 debut Love Comes Close, and returned for the band's 2011 follow-up Cherish the Light Years, where he also co-wrote the tracks "Catacombs" and "Underworld USA" with frontman Wes Eisold, his former XO Skeletons bandmate.

Jet Fueled Horses

Martin also played guitar and instrumentation on Dead Astronauts, a limited cassette release from Jet Fueled Horses, a duo with Max G. Morton, issued in a run of just 123 copies in 2011.

Work with Cage (rapper)

Following his exit from Hatebreed, Martin became a close collaborator of rapper Cage (Chris Palko), serving as a guitarist, producer, and co-executive producer on Cage's 2009 album Depart from Me, released on Definitive Jux alongside production from El-P. Critics described the record's sound, built around guitar feedback, synths, and rock instrumentation, as a significant departure from Cage's earlier sample-based work, with Martin's guitar and keyboard parts cited as central to the shift. Martin also toured with Cage in support of the album, playing guitar and keys alongside Cage's DJ.

Kid Cudi and other collaborations

Martin contributed guitar to Kid Cudi's WZRD album, the self-titled rock-oriented project Cudi released with producer Dot da Genius. He has also been credited on projects by Cold Cave, Head Automatica, Handsome Boy Modeling School, and Necro, among others, working variously as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer across genres.

Guest appearances and later collaborations

Martin has lent guitar to a range of one-off recordings over the years. He guested on Throwdown's 2005 album Vendetta (Trustkill Records), soloing on the track "Shut You Down," and appeared the same era on Converge's Axe to Fall (Epitaph Records, 2009), contributing guest vocals and lead guitar to "Reap What You Sow." He later joined the official lineup of Jacob Bannon's project Wear Your Wounds for Rust on the Gates of Heaven (Deathwish, 2019), and became a member of the death-metal-leaning Umbra Vitae, recording Shadow of Life (Deathwish, 2020) and The Light of Death (Deathwish, 2024) alongside Bannon, Mike McKenzie, Greg Weeks, and Jon Rice. In 2024, Martin also contributed guitar to Smoke AxD's Vaya Con Dios (Blackout! Records).

Twitching Tongues

In September 2015, Martin joined Los Angeles hardcore/metal band Twitching Tongues as lead guitarist. Vocalist Colin Young and guitarist Taylor Young, who had grown up admiring Martin's work in Hatebreed, described bringing him into the band as a major moment for the group. Martin remained with the band through their follow-up, Gaining Purpose Through Passionate Hatred (Metal Blade Records, 2018).

100 Demons

Martin has ties to fellow Connecticut band 100 Demons going back to the local hardcore scene of the late 1990s, when he played guitar with the group. Following the 2024 death of longtime 100 Demons bassist Erik Barrett, Martin formally rejoined the band in 2025, this time on bass, marking the group's first work on new material in over two decades. The resulting album, Embrace the Black Light, was released in 2026 through Closed Casket Activities.

Solo instrumental work: Sleepless Battles and No More Magic

Martin has also released music under his own instrumental projects. In 2017, he launched Sleepless Battles, releasing the track "Up All Night" through his own label, Residual Effects. He returned to solo instrumental work between 2020 and 2022 as No More Magic, blending downtempo hip hop production with dark, atmospheric melody; the project's debut EP, Introducing the Magician, also released through Residual Effects, was described as paying homage to classic hip-hop production while pushing into moodier, more cinematic territory.

Tattooing

Alongside his music career, Martin works as a tattoo artist at Brass City Tattoo in Waterbury, Connecticut, where he specializes in traditional-style tattooing.
