ScapeCon (or scapecon) is an annual conference series aimed at early career researchers in Aegean Bronze Age archaeology and neighboring disciplines. It was initiated in 2018 at the University of Heidelberg, Department of Classical Archaeology. The name of the conference series derives from the title of the first installment "No (e)scape? - A Relational Achaeology of Man, Nature and Thing" and was adapted in later cycles as "ScapeCon".

Scapecon explicitly invites (very) early career scholars, beginning with graduate students that are in the process of obtaining their MA or Ph.D. degrees or have only recently done so. It is a platform for presenting their research, to gain experience in drafting, delivering, and publishing papers and networking in an encouraging and supportive environment. The conference is organized by an annually changing committee of young researchers pursuing their degree in Classical or Prehistoric Archaeology and related disciplines. The venues change annualy, new venues being selected at the end of each year's conference.

Conference venues and themes

[edit]

Conference Theme: No (e)scape? - A Relational Achaeology of Man, Nature and Thing[1]

The conference took place form 23 to 25 March 2018 in hybrid format and revolved about the theoretical concept of relational archaeology and the proceedings published through Propylaeum (Specialized information service ancient studies) of the Heidelberg University Library.[2]

Conference Theme: No (e)scape? Society, Environment, and Artifacts Entrapped

Breaking Boundaries: Negotiating Change in the Aegean Bronze Age[4] The conference was delayed from its original schedule in spring due to the Covid-19 pandemic and took place online on 22 and 29 September and 6 October 2020. The proceedings were published as a supplement volume of the journal Tijdschrift voor Mediterrane Archeologie.[5]

Conference Theme: ScapeCon 9: Transforming Scapes. Processes of Transformation and Continuity in the Prehistoric

Aegean[14] The upcoming conference will take place at the University of Lublin from 27-28 May 2027. It will focus on transformation in the prehistoric Aegean, covering the topics of innovation, adaptation, and persistence as evidenced in the material record.

Participation

[edit]

ScapeCon is funded by third-party funding and host institutions, aiming to keep it accessible through zero participation fees both for researchers presenting and for visitors. Hybrid lectures have been the rule to date. Interested researchers can submit abstracts to the annually circulated call for papers.

Recorded Sessions

[edit]

Most installments of the ScapeCon series are recorded, and some lectures are available through youtube channel, given that permission was granted by the relevant speakers at the conference. There are currently two youtube channels that host ScapeCon 1 (2018) and Scapecon 4 (2021).
