Saul Alcaraz is a Mexican-American glass artist and glass-blowing teacher[1][2][3][4] living in Santa Barbara, California. His chandeliers, sculptures, and ornate objects have been commissioned by hotels, museums, and restaurants.[5]
Early life and education
[edit]Alcaraz arrived in his adoptive home of Santa Barbara at age 13.[6] Alcaraz was introduced to glassblowing at Santa Barbara City College in 1991. He was mentored by his future wife's father, renowned glassblower Mario Real, and became his apprentice for a decade.[5][7]
Career
[edit]For two decades Alcaraz has been a frequent collaborator with architect Jeff Shelton, contributing to numerous architectural projects.[5][8][9] In 2012, he participated in a Santa Barbara Arts Fund Salon tour and discussion, along with Jeff Shelton.[10] Alcaraz has also worked closely with sculptor Tal Avitzur, creating glass pieces for spaceship, robot, and creature sculptures.[11] In 2010 Alcaraz was involved in a regional Valentine's Day collaborative event, featuring chefs, chocolatiers, and artists.[12] He also contributes original art to various charitable fundraising events.[13][14] In 2013 cinematographer Jimmy Matlosz shot a short documentary film, Heart of Glass, on Alcaraz.[15]
