Draft:Sanjay Krishnan
Sanjay Krishnan is an American computer scientist and an associate professor of computer science at the University of Chicago. His research addresses the management of corrupted, missing, and uncertain data in database systems and machine learning systems.[1][2] His work includes the ActiveClean data-cleaning system and for DeepScribe, a deep-learning tool for reading ancient cuneiform tablets.[3][2]
Education and career
[edit]Krishnan received a master's degree and a doctoral degree in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley, where his doctoral research was advised by Ken Goldberg.[4][2] He completed his doctorate in 2018 and joined the University of Chicago as an assistant professor of computer science the same year, later being promoted to associate professor.[5][1]
Research
[edit]Krishnan works on data cleaning, sampling, and approximate query processing, and on the interaction between data errors and statistical modeling.[2] At Berkeley, he and his collaborators developed ActiveClean, a system for interactively cleaning the data used to train machine-learning models; a demonstration of the work received the Best Demonstration Award at the 2016 ACM SIGMOD conference.[6]
At the University of Chicago, Krishnan was part of the research team that developed DeepScribe, a deep-learning model that localizes and classifies Elamite cuneiform signs in images of clay tablets.[7] The project was also reported on by Digital Trends, Unite.AI, and DeepLearning.AI's The Batch.[8][9][10]
Krishnan has also worked on the Sociome Data Commons, a public-health data platform that applies machine learning to noisy or incomplete clinical data and social determinants of health.[11]
Artistic work
[edit]Krishnan was one of the collaborators on Bloom, an internet-based artwork that renders live seismic activity from California's Hayward Fault as an evolving field of abstract imagery. Bloom has been exhibited at the Nevada Museum of Art and discussed in the University of California Press journal Boom California.[12][13]
