Early life and education

Samuel Oseni Adamu was born on 1 October 1934 in Arigidi, in the Akoko area of present-day Ondo State, Nigeria.

Adamu’s doctoral research concerned econometrics and consumer expenditure. His doctoral thesis, ‘‘An Econometric Study of Expenditure Patterns of Consumers in Selected Urban Areas of Nigeria’’, is recorded in the University of Ibadan Institutional Repository with a 1972 date.Adamu, S. Academic career

Adamu was associated with the development of statistics education at the University of Ibadan. The University of Ibadan reported that he was one of three scholars honoured with an Award of Excellence for contributions to statistics education in Nigeria at the 40th anniversary celebration of the university’s Department of Statistics."40th anniversary celebration: department of statistics honours scholars". According to the University of Ibadan, Adamu played a role in transforming the Department of Statistics into an independent department in 1973. The university also described him as a specialist in Sampling Theory and Official Statistics and noted that he supervised master’s dissertations and PhD theses.

Adamu’s scholarly work included research in statistics, econometrics and the Nigerian statistical system.

In 1978, Adamu published ‘‘The Nigerian Statistical System’’. Adamu served in Nigeria’s official statistical administration.

The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics’ historical account of the Federal Office of Statistics lists ‘’‘Professor Samuel O. Adamu’’’ as ‘’‘Sole Administrator, Federal Office of Statistics, 1989–1991’’’. The same historical record lists E. O. Ambah as his predecessor and O. O. Ajayi as his successor.
