Sam Evans, known professionally as Soul Man Sam is a blues and soul singer who was born in Memphis, TN in 1948. He moved to Alaska in the late 1980's and stayed about 25 years before moving to Austin, TX where he's now a staple at many legendary Austin venues.
Sam won the 2026 Austin Music Award for his residency at Antone's for the Blue Monday show.[1] He's also been immortalized on the large mural painted on the side of C-Boys Heart and Soul[2] venue on South Congress along with Jimmie Vaughan and others. Before the old Skylark Lounge closed it's doors in May of 2025, Sam was also the Sunday night headliner for many years, as well as a huge draw when he played the weekend headline slot.
In 2019, Sam was featured the prestigious Living Blues Magazine[3] where he discussed slowly losing his vision to glaucoma[4] since the 2000's. He is now almost entirely blind, only able to see shadows moving in the right circumstances.
Over the years, Sam has been a regular guest of Jimmie Vaughan at the Austin Blues Festival, and shared the stage with Gary Clark Jr., Billy Gibbons, Delbert McLinton, and Booker T. Jones.[5]
