STM Systems Inc. was a microcomputer company based in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire. In 1976 it announced and sold the Baby! 1, a transportable 6502-based computer. Byte later described the Baby! 1 as the first portable microcomputer.[1]
History
[edit]STM Systems announced the Baby! 1 in August 1976.[2] The company used the slogan "Specialists in Technology for Microprocessors" and listed P.O. Box 248, Mont Vernon, New Hampshire in its advertising.[3] Donald C. Gunter (1938–2017), a sales engineer from Mont Vernon,[4] represented the firm in the trade press; he visited the Byte offices to demonstrate updates to the Baby! 1.[2]
The company advertised the Baby! 1 as a fully assembled system rather than a kit. Its ads stated that each unit received 168 hours of burn-in testing before shipment.[3] STM Systems placed full-page advertisements in hobbyist magazines such as Byte.[3]
Products
[edit]The Baby! 1 was STM Systems' only known product. It combined keyboard, power supply, and mainboard in an acrylic case sized 14.5 × 10 × 4.5 inches and weighing about 10 pounds; the computer shipped in an attaché briefcase.[5] Base models offered 2 KB or 4 KB of RAM and sold for $850 to $1,000.[2] Software bundled with the system included Tiny BASIC and TECO.[2]
At the Personal Computing '76 show in Atlantic City, STM Systems announced a 5.25-inch floppy disk drive priced at $750;[5]
