Development

[edit]

During late 2025, Parking (2023) director Ramkumar Balakrishnan was reported as one of the directors being considered for Rajinikanth's Thalaivar 173 after Sundar C exited the project.[1][2] In January 2026, after Cibi Chakravarthy was chosen to direct the film, Ramkumar reportedly approached Sivakarthikeyan for a possible collaboration. He supposedly made changes to the initial idea he narrated to Rajinikanth and pitched an altered version to Sivakarthikeyan.[3] The following March, reports claimed that the project was expected to be produced by Passion Studios, who were supposedly aiming for a relative fast production, and Sivakarthikeyan would potentially work on the film alongside Seyon.[4] Ramkumar's second film was originally supposed to be Silambarasan's 49th film. In July, the film was shelved.[5]

Pre-production

[edit]

By March 2026, The Times of India described pre-production as already gaining momentum, with casting discussions underway and shooting expected to begin relatively quickly.[4] Although the film was likely to be produced by Passion Studios,[4] the official announcement in September instead confirmed Sathya Jyothi Films as producer, with Sendhil Thyagarajan, Arjun Thyagarajan and Sai Siddharth named as producers.[6]

Casting

[edit]

Kayadu Lohar was cast as female lead, pairing alongside Sivakarthikeyan.[7] She was also the lead in Ramkumar's shelved STR 49.[8] Malavika Manoj was reported in March 2026 to be in talks for the role of Sivakarthikeyan's sister; her casting has not yet been officially announced.[4]
