Draft:RunDurance

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

RunDurance is an elimination-style endurance running event in which competitors run repeated laps of a 400-metre athletics track until they are eliminated. The event was founded in Worthing, England, and is based on a combination of track cycling elimination races and ultramarathon-style endurance competition.

History

[edit]

RunDurance was developed in Worthing, West Sussex, with its initial events taking place at the Worthing Leisure Centre athletics track. The event was created to provide an endurance race format in which competitors of different abilities could compete in the same race.

The event uses a mass-start format, with competitors beginning together rather than being separated into waves or seeded groups. RunDurance does not use traditional age categories as part of its standard race format.

Format

[edit]

RunDurance takes place on a 400-metre running track. Competitors start together and complete successive laps of the circuit.

When a competitor is lapped, they are eliminated from the race at the end of their current lap. The race continues as competitors are progressively eliminated until one runner remains. The final remaining competitor is declared the winner.

The format means that competitors must balance their own endurance and pace with the performance of the other runners. Unlike a conventional race, the total distance is not predetermined.

Timing and results

[edit]

RunDurance events use RFID timing to record competitors' laps. Timing data can include a competitor's identification, lap number, individual lap time and cumulative race time.

Results are used to maintain records of competitors' performances across different events. Competitor statistics can include the number of events completed, total laps, personal records and finishing positions.

RunDurance also maintains a ranking system based on competitors' performances at its events.

Events and venues

[edit]

RunDurance was initially established at the Worthing Leisure Centre track and has subsequently been developed as an event format that can be held at other athletics facilities.

The organisation works with venues and local organisations to establish additional RunDurance events. Event infrastructure can include electronic timing, signage and systems for recording and publishing results.

The original concept envisaged four events per year, with the number of events intended to increase as additional venues are established.

Organisation

[edit]

RunDurance is responsible for developing and administering its events, including venue relationships, event organisation, timing, results, rankings and volunteer management.

The organisation uses a range of volunteer roles to support events. These include track marshals, registration staff, set-up and take-down teams, timing and results staff, photographers, commentators, event support staff and event directors.

A volunteer credit system is also used to recognise participation in volunteering at RunDurance events.

Website

[edit]

The RunDurance website provides information about events and the organisation, as well as online entry, results, rankings and competitor information.

The website also provides personal statistics for competitors, allowing them to view their participation and performances across multiple RunDurance events.

Branding

[edit]

RunDurance uses an orange and black visual identity. Its logo features a black letter "R" within an orange geometric design.

The branding is used across the organisation's website, event signage, promotional material and merchandise.
