Royan Institute

Royan Institute (Persian: پژوهشگاه رویان) is an Iranian public research institute affiliated with the Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (ACECR), which is a public non-governmental organization.[1] Founded in 1991 by Saeid Kazemi Ashtiani, it conducts research in reproductive biomedicine, stem cell biology, and developmental biotechnology.[2][3]

The institute began its activities with a primary focus on treating infertility and conducting research in reproductive biomedicine. Its scope of research later broadened to include stem cells and developmental biology. [4][5]

Research Activities

Royan collaborates with national and international research institutions and publishes two peer-reviewed journals: Cell Journal and International Journal of Fertility and Sterility.[6][7]

Scientific Milestones

  • 2003: Established the first human embryonic stem cell (hESC) line in Iran and the Middle East.[8]

Research Divisions

Royan Institute operates three main divisions: the Reproductive Biomedicine Institute, which focuses on infertility treatment, reproductive genetics, endocrinology, and embryology; the Stem Cell Biology and Technology Institute, which conducts research in stem cell science and cell-based therapies; and the Developmental Biotechnology Institute, which studies developmental biology and biotechnology applications.[12][13][14]

Affiliated Companies

Royan Institute has facilitated the creation of spin-off companies focused on regenerative medicine and biotechnology, such as Royan Stem Cell Technology Company and Cell Tech Pharmed Company.[15][16][17]
