Rossin or Rossin Bicycles was the manufacturer of road-racing bicycles beginning in 1974 and was known for new racing and time trial bicycle designs.
History
[edit]Vittorio Ghezzi, Giuseppe Ghezzi, Domenico Garbelli, and Alberto Inzaghi in 1973 recruited Mario Rossin to join in creating a new company to manufacture competitive bikes to supply their Italian amateur racing teams.[1][2]
Mario Rossin was formerly a bicycle racer and had served as chief builder at Colnago bicycles. His work with fitting top racers at Colnago including Eddy Merckx built his reputation for skilled craftsmanship.
The original five-member partnership reduced to Domenico Garbelli and Mario Rossin by 1980. Rossin acquired the Pogliaghi brand in November 1983 from Sante Pogliaghi when he retired, bringing the Pogliaghi production and Sante's expertise including road, track and tandem bike designs to the Rossin factory.[3] Later still, Alcide Basso of Basso Bikes bought the Poglaighi brand and remaining Pogliaghi production from Rossin in November 1989.[4]
Rossin incorporated aerodynamic features into frame designs, developed new specialty time trial bikes designs such as the Futura CX, introduced the first disk wheels in 1983 and was among the first to add an onboard computer. [5] [6] [7] [8]
In 1992 Rossin SRL was acquired by FINROSS SRL. GRUPPO BICI obtained the Rossin brand by 2000. Master frame builder Mario Rossin passed away in 2018.[9]
Trademark
[edit]The Rossin brand logo design was influenced by the label on Royal-Cola bottles and by the wording on Rossignol skis. Rossingnol protested, so the logo design was changed in 1977.[10]
Rossin advertising included the slogan "Biciclette per vincere" or "Bicycles to Win."
The trademark consists of the word "ROSSIN" in stylized characters, or two polygons, one inside each other, containing an artistic letter "R".[11]
Production overview
[edit]Rossin desiged and produced in Italy traditional steel racing bicycles, time trial bicycles specialized for triathlons and later, carbon fiber racing bicycles.[12] Rossin was also the first Italian bicycle brand to produce in 1984 a distinct mountain bike model.
