Roger Kumar is an Indian engineer and entrepreneur, best known as the founder and managing director of CASE Group (Composite Aqua Systems and Equipments Pvt. Ltd.), a Faridabad-based engineering company specializing in coal gasification technology, cooling towers, and industrial water treatment. He has been associated with the development and commercialization of indigenous coal gasification systems designed for high-ash Indian coal, including a project at Rungta Mines described as the world's first use of coal gasification for iron-ore pellet roasting.[1][2]
Early life and education
[edit]Roger Kumar graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, completing his studies in 1986.[3][4]
Career

[edit]In January 1993, Kumar established Composite Aqua Systems and Equipments (CASE) with an initial focus on manufacturing "Scale-Ban," a non-chemical water treatment device, and water-cooling towers. The company was incorporated with its registered office in Delhi and corporate office in Surajkund, Faridabad, Haryana, with manufacturing facilities in Bahadurgarh, Haryana.[3][5]
In its early years, CASE Group supplied cooling towers (including FRP towers for steel and power plants) and the Scale-Ban system to industrial clients. The company states it was among the first in India to manufacture non-chemical water treatment equipment and FRP cooling towers for heavy industry.[5][6]
Expansion into coal gasification
[edit]CASE Group later expanded into coal gasification technology, developing gasifier systems designed to process high-ash Indian coal (with ash content exceeding 40% and calorific values below 3,200 kcal/kg) into producer gas (syngas). The company's gasifier portfolio includes hot coal gasifiers, cold coal gasifiers, circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) gasifiers, and entrained flow gasifiers. These systems are designed to replace furnace oil, LPG, light diesel oil (LDO), heavy fuel oil (HFO), and natural gas in industrial heating applications.[7][3]
The company's gasification systems incorporate zero liquid discharge (ZLD) technology, in which phenol water is reused as a gasifying agent, and PLC-based automation for continuous operation.[7][8]
Rungta Mines project
[edit]CASE Group's installation at Rungta Mines in Odisha and Jharkhand has been described as the world's first application of coal gasification technology for iron-ore pellet roasting. The project was reported in trade publications covering the Odisha and Jharkhand mining regions.[1][2][9]
Coal gasification and carbon capture technology
[edit]Kumar has advocated coal gasification as a pathway to reducing India's energy import dependence, citing India's coal reserves of approximately 401 billion tonnes and annual crude oil imports valued at US$137 billion (FY 2024-25). He has argued that coal gasification can produce hydrogen at approximately one-third the cost of green hydrogen, and that carbon dioxide generated in the gasification process can be captured and combined with green hydrogen to produce urea, contributing to India's carbon neutrality goals for 2070.[3][8]
Kumar has also highlighted the disparity between China's 60-year head start in coal gasification—including dedicated academic programs and doctoral research—and India's lack of formal academic coverage of the subject in mechanical engineering curricula. He has called for a national policy on coal gasification to be incorporated into Indian engineering education.[6][9]
Indigenous sustainability advocacy
[edit]Kumar positions his work under the framework of "Indigenous Sustainability"—the idea that India's path to environmental responsibility should be built on domestic resources, domestic technology, and India's own development timeline, rather than imported ESG frameworks. He argues that coal gasification represents Indigenous Sustainability in practice: India's most abundant resource (coal) processed through Indian-designed technology to produce clean fuel for Indian industry, with carbon emissions captured as input for Indian agriculture (urea).[3][8]
All CASE gasification plants use Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) technology, and the company states its systems produce lower emissions of suspended particulate matter (SPM), SOx, COx, and NOx compared to direct coal combustion.[7][6]
