Robbie Overson is a London-born guitarist and composer based in Ireland since the 1970s, best known as a member of the folk rock band Scullion and as a touring and recording musician for singers including Karan Casey and Eimear Quinn.
Career
[edit]Overson joined Scullion in 1987, replacing guitarist Greg Boland, and remains the band's third member alongside Sonny Condell and Philip King.[2] Before joining, he had played with several Dublin acts, including The Business and Red Peters.[3] His instrumental composition "Maguire and Paterson" appears on Scullion's compilation albums Ghosts and Heroes (1992) and Eyelids into Snow (2001), and was recorded by Sharon Shannon on her album Out the Gap (1994/95).[4]
Since the late 1990s, Overson has toured and recorded extensively with singer Karan Casey, appearing on her albums Seal Maiden (1997), The Winds Begin to Sing (2001), Distant Shore (2003), Chasing the Sun (2005), and Ships in the Forest (2008).[5][6] He has toured internationally with Casey's band, including performances in Switzerland and Germany in 2000 and 2004, and at Celtic Connections in Glasgow in 2008.[7][8]
Overson has also worked extensively with singer Eimear Quinn, a musical partnership dating to her first EP, Winter, Fire and Snow (1996), and continuing on her 2024 album Songs of Winter Dreaming.[9]
Overson has collaborated with Eoin Duignan, a Dingle-based uilleann piper, over the years, including at a festival date in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, in November 2004, and is named by Duignan as one of the musicians who has recorded with him across his catalogue of solo albums.[10][11]
Other collaborators include singers Seán Keane and Eleanor Shanley, and English singer Donovan, on whose 2002 album Pied Piper Overson plays electric guitar.[12] He also played guitar on the jazz score of the 1998 film The General, composed by Richie Buckley.[13]
Solo work
[edit]Overson released a solo instrumental album, Overdue, in 2004. Reviewing it in The Irish Times, critic Siobhán Long called it one of the more daring releases of the year and "late night music to still the soul."[14]
