Rob Sacchetto

Rob Sachetto was born in Sudbury Ontario on February 26th, 1969, and is known for his prolific portfolio of hand-painted zombie portraits. Media coverage of Sacchetto’s art has appeared in publications such as Dread Central,^[1] Rue Morgue^[2], and The Daily Mail.

Early life

Rob started his career at seven years old drawing dinosaurs which sparked his interest in Kaiju Monsters and zombies. In 2006, Rob launched one of the earliest known websites offering custom zombie portrait commissions, contributing to the growth of the genre in online art communities. Rob’s interest in zombies has led to his involvement in documentaries, graphic novels, comics and bicycle cards. His work is heavily influenced by iconic comic book artists such as Frank Frazetta, Neal Adams, John Byrne, Gil Kane, Jack Kirby, John Romita, Simon Bisley, Mike Mignola, and Art Adams. Rob cultivated a distinct style that merges traditional media with horror iconography.

Portrait Artist

Rob's portrait website Zombie Portraits was launched in 2006, to allow fans to submit JPEGs to be zombified. His’s artistic method combines watercolor washes, ink, and pen to create stylized zombie portraits. While processing his pieces for his online posts he will adjust their colour levels for maximum impact. He bends the constraints of watercolour by integrating ink and pen to redefine traditional art and integrates digital technology to celebrate the horror genre online. His Heads of the Living Dead (HOTLD) and Zombiewood series are among his most celebrated.

Media coverage of Sacchetto’s art has appeared in publications such as Dread Central,^[1] Rue Morgue^[2], and The Daily Mail., reflecting his contributions to indie horror aesthetics. Throughout 2012 Rob’s zombie portraits of celebrities would gain attention from The Daily Mail,^[3] Huffington Post,^[4] and the Toronto Star^[5] for the varied reactions that he garnered from horror fanatics and celebrity fans alike. In 2020 Rob’s work was featured on CTV News by Molly Frommer where he officially announced that he surpassed 10,000 zombie portraits^[6]. Rob has completed on average 4.5 portraits per day since the launch of his portrait website in 2006.

Documentaries

Rob was involved in the Canadian documentary '''Zombiemania'''^[7] 2008 by Donna Davies as an interviewee alongside George Romero, Tom Savini, Max Brooks and Greg Nicotero. Rob’s morphing portraits were also used in the documentary depicting these prominent figures in the horror community. This documentary explores the impact that zombies have had on popular culture throughout history while featuring discourse from prominent figures within the horror genre community.

Comic Books & Novels

In 2009 Rob published his first illustrated book The Zombie Handbook: How to Identify the Living Dead and Survive the Coming Zombie Apocalypse with Ulysses Press. This book helps readers identify various types of zombies, their diet, and the most effective methods to protect oneself from them.

His’s second illustrated book Zombiewood: The Celebrity Dead Exposed was published in 2010 featuring a satirical take on celebrity popular culture through the creation of fictional tabloid style articles mocking the public personas of zombified celebrities. The book received mixed reactions, including media coverage in the Daily Mail^[8] and Toronto Star, for its depiction of British royal figures.

Rob Sacchetto printed Cape Fear: An Introduction to Fear and Other Stories in 2011 which acts as the anthology leading into Cape Fear: Power Struggle. He was inspired by the movie The Crow to create the Cape Fear comic series. In 2014 Rob’s comic book and graphic novel Cape Fear: Power Struggle was published, with a print run of 5,000 copies leading to a second print run of 3,000 copies. This graphic novel has been described as a blend of The Lord of the Rings, The X-Files, and Batman. Rob is in the process of making another graphic novel for this series.

In 2016 Rob created a pinup book titled Divas of the Dead which showcased living dead pin-up girls in combination with this unique zombie art style.

Collaborations

Rob collaborated with Jonathan Maberry to create Jonathan’s zombie hunter ‘chase’ cards that are featured in his five-part novel series called Rot & Ruin. Rob drew 5-character designs for each book which were published by Simon and Schuster; these designs are featured on the inner cover of each novel. Rob also created the cover art for the comic book adaptation of the Rot & Ruin series that was published by Idea and Design Works (IDW) Publishing in 2014. The franchise has expanded it into a webtoon adaptation and the series is in development for a feature film.

In 2013 Tamika Jones featured Rob in a Q & A exclusive^[9] that highlighted his book deals for The Zombie Handbook: How to Identify the Living Dead and Survive the Coming Zombie Apocalypse, and Zombiewood: The Celebrity Dead Exposed. In this interview he spoke about his continued collaborations with novelists like Carl S. Plumer for his book Mad About Undead You which was published by Someday Press. In 2013 Rob released his play cards in collaboration with Bicycle which features 52 cards with original artworks depicting zombies as they engage in everyday activities.

Rob has taught at various Catholic Schools in Sudbury via the program Learning Through The Arts for the last several years which is dedicated to students interested in the process of creating comic book art. He’s also taught at Cambrian College in their workshop/mentorship program.

In 2022 Rob was featured in a CBC video article by Brandon Michael Gray where he demonstrates his use of traditional mediums like watercolour, pen, and ink to create his portraits. Rob streams daily on YouTube to provide access to traditional art and to bring zombie fans and art fans together.

In 2024 he showcased selections from his portrait series, Heads of the Living Dead and Celebrity Zombie Portraits, along with his Gothic Nature Art landscape series at Art Gallery of Sudbury. In a recent exhibition titled Faces of Decay, curators highlighted Rob’s “consistent exploration and remodelling of the monstrous head” as reminiscent of renaissance anatomical studies, framing his work as more than horror, it’s a study in form and imagination. This exhibition was featured by the Sudbury Star, ^[10]CTV News,^[11] and Sudbury News.^[12] He also streams art tutorials daily on YouTube to engage zombie fans and art enthusiasts worldwide.
