Robert J. "Rob" Perez is an American biopharmaceutical executive, a former public company chief executive officer (CEO), with more than 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, and a philanthropist. He is currently the Senior Advisor at General Atlantic.[1], a global growth equity firm. Prior to becoming an advisor, Perez served as Operating Partner at General Atlantic from January 2019 to January 2025, a role in which he provided strategic support to the firm’s life sciences investment team and portfolio companies.[1]
Perez is the former President and chief executive officer (CEO) of Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc.,[2][3][4] and the Founder and Chairman of Life Science Cares[5][6][7][8][9][10], a non-profit organization that mobilizes the life sciences industry to combat poverty in the US.

Perez is a native of Inglewood, CA, born in 1964 to Creole parents originating from New Orleans, Louisiana. Perez earned a Bachelor of Science in Business from California State University, Los Angeles in 1987 and a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1999.
Business Career
Biogen
Perez joined Biogen, Inc. in 1995 and was one of the architects of the commercial model for the launch of the company’s first commercial product, AVONEX® (interferon beta-1a). Perez went on to serve as Vice President of Biogen, Inc.’s US Central Nervous System (CNS) business unit, where he was responsible for commercial leadership of an $800 million business noted for its rapid market penetration, achieving a 50% market share within seven months of release.
Cubist Pharmaceuticals
In 2003, Perez joined Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc.,[2][3][4] a public pharmaceutical development company as Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, and led the launch of Cubicin® (daptomycin for injection), one of the most successful intravenous antibiotic launch in U.S. history based on sales revenue. He also served as Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer[11], and President prior to becoming CEO, a position he held until January 2015 and the company’s $9.5 billion acquisition by Merck & Co.
Investment and Board Leadership
Perez serves on the Board of Directors for several biotechnology firms, including Vir Biotechnology[12] and Rapport Therapeutics[13]. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute[14]. He also holds board positions on Immunocore Inc.[15], Spark Therapeutics[16], PathAI, and PantherRX.
Philanthropy and Social Impact
Life Science Cares
In 2016, Perez became the Founder and Chairman of Life Science Cares[5][6][7][8][9][10], a platform that organizes the financial and human capital of the life sciences industry to support community-based anti-poverty programs in the US.
The organization oversees Project Onramp, a workforce development initiative matching students from under-resourced backgrounds with high-wage internships in the life sciences sector. In early 2024, the organization reached a milestone of $20 million in cumulative grants distributed across its chapters in Boston, Philadelphia, San Diego, New York, and the San Francisco Bay Area. In an interview with The BioCentury Show[17], Perez described his vision for the industry as having a unique responsibility to alleviate poverty in the hubs where it operates.
Biopharma Leaders of Color (BLOC)
Perez is the co-founder of Biopharma Leaders of Color[18][19][20] (BLOC), a community of leaders united to advance the success and access of under-represented people of color throughout the life sciences industry.
