Rio is an American media franchise created by Carlos Saldanha and produced by 20th Century Animation. The series features the voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Leslie Mann, Rodrigo Santoro, Jemaine Clement, George Lopez, Will.i.am, Jamie Foxx, and Tracy Morgan.
The first two films were produced by Blue Sky Studios and released by 20th Century Studios. The first film, Rio, was released on April 15, 2011, to positive reviews from critics. The second film, Rio 2, was released on April 11, 2014, to mixed reviews from critics. The films have grossed $983 million combined. The franchise follows a Spix's macaw named Blu, who is taken back to Rio de Janeiro to mate with Jewel, a female macaw.

[edit]Blu, a domesticated male Spix's macaw, is taken back to Rio de Janeiro to mate with Jewel, a free-spirited female macaw. Whilst escaping from bird smugglers and Nigel, a cockatoo, they fall in love.
Rio 2 (2014)
[edit]Blu, Jewel, and their children leave Rio for the Amazon rainforest to find other macaws, while Nigel pursues Blu to revenge.
Rio 3 (TBA)
[edit]In April 2014, director of both films Carlos Saldanha stated in possibility for a Rio 3, "Of course, I have a lot of stories to tell, so we're [starting to] prepare for it".[1] After the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney and the closure of Blue Sky Studios, Rio 3 was officially announced, with Ray DeLaurentis writing the screenplay.[2] In 2023, while discussing Rio 3, Saldanha stated that he was "working on a project to make it happen", confirming potential of a sequel.[3]

[edit]On October 25, 2019, after the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney, it was reported that a spin-off thats centered on Nico and Pedro is in development for Disney+.[4]

Video games
[edit]A mobile game, Angry Birds Rio, was released on March 22, 2011. The game is a collaboration with Angry Birds.[14]
A video game named Rio was released on April 12, 2011 for the Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.[15]
