Richard "Rich" Follett (born 1960) is an American poet, educator, singer-songwriter, actor, and playwright based in Virginia. He has served as the poet laureate of Strasburg, Virginia, since 2018.[1] His poetry has appeared in literary publications including BlazeVOX, The Montucky Review, Red Fez, and CounterExample Poetics.[1]

Early life and education

Follett was born in 1960 and grew up on Long Island, New York.[1] He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Arts from Hofstra University and moved to Virginia in 1981.[1] He later earned a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Phoenix.[1]

Follett worked as an educator in Virginia public schools, teaching English, theatre, creative writing, and mythology.[1]

Poetry

Follett has published several collections of poetry. His first four collections listed by the Virginia Poets Database are Responsorials, written with Constance Stadler and published in 2009; Silence, Inhabited (2011); Human &c. (2013); and Photo-Ku: Kigo and Satori at Play in Pixel-Land (2016).[1]

His poetry has appeared in print and online literary publications including BlazeVOX, The Montucky Review, Red Fez, Poetic Diversity, and CounterExample Poetics.[1] He is a life member of the Poetry Society of Virginia and contributed to the organization's centennial anthology.[1]

Follett and poet Constance Stadler later collaborated on Geminations, published by NeoPoiesis Press in 2023.[2]

Poet laureate of Strasburg

Follett has served as the poet laureate of Strasburg, Virginia, since 2018.[1] In that role, he has written and presented poetry associated with civic and community events.

Town records identify Follett as the town's poet laureate and document his participation in municipal events. In 2020, Strasburg mayor Brandy Boies thanked Follett for reading a poem and performing a song at the town's holiday tree-lighting ceremony.[3]

The Town of Strasburg has also published several of Follett's poems, including "to make a town", written in October 2018,[4] and "illumination", a poem associated with the town's holiday celebration.[5]

Follett has appeared as a guest poet at institutions and events including the College of Southern Maryland, Shenandoah University, Handley Regional Library, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the In the Company of Laureates symposium.[1]

Music and theatre

In addition to poetry, Follett has worked as a singer-songwriter, musician, actor, playwright, and director.[1] He has also served as an editor for NeoPoiesis Press.[6]
