refurbed is an Austrian online marketplace for refurbished consumer products, founded in February 2017 and headquartered in Vienna, Austria.[1][2] The platform connects professional sellers with end customers across 24 European markets.[3]

refurbed does not refurbish products itself. Sellers on the platform are required to subject products to a 40-step refurbishment process and must offer a minimum twelve-month warranty.[4][5] Product categories include smartphones, laptops, tablets, household appliances, e-bikes, and sports accessories.[6]

History

The company was co-founded by Peter Windischhofer, Kilian Kaminski, and Jürgen Riedl in Vienna in February 2017.[2][7] According to Forbes Austria, Windischhofer developed the idea for refurbed after buying a secondhand iPhone in late 2016 that failed without warranty. Kaminski had previously worked in Amazon's refurbished products division in Munich.[8][2] Co-founders Windischhofer and Kaminski were named EY Entrepreneur of the Year Austria in 2023 in the Start-ups category.[9][10]

refurbed raised a €13 million Series A in 2020[11][4], a €45 million Series B in 2021[12][13], and a €54 million Series C in 2023.[14][15] In October 2025, the company raised a further €50 million.[16][17] The company reported profitability in Austria and Germany in 2022.[15] In 2025, Der Standard reported that Refurbed had achieved profitability in March, alongside 40% year-on-year sales growth.[18][16] refurbed surpassed €1 billion in cumulative GMV in 2023[7] and €3 billion in early 2026.[19][20][3]

Sustainability

refurbed measures the environmental impact of its platform in collaboration with Fraunhofer Research GmbH, using a methodology verified against ISO 14040/44 lifecycle assessment standards.[21] The platform has been cited as a case study by the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform.[22]
