Randall Putz (born June 19, 1963) is an American businessman and politician serving as the Mayor of Big Bear Lake, California.[1] A member of the Democratic Party, Putz has held local elected office in San Bernardino County since 2008.[2] He is a candidate for the California State Assembly, advancing to the November 2026 general election to represent the 34th District.[3]

Early life and education

Putz was born and raised in California. He attended the University of Oregon, where he earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in 1985.[2]

Business career

Putz is an entrepreneur who has founded multiple technology and marketing organizations. He is the CEO of Gobo, LLC, a consulting firm providing marketing and technology services to government and corporate clients.[4] In 2014, Putz developed California’s first Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) infographic, a data visualization layout adopted by over 140 California public school districts.[5]

In 2018, he founded the Chirp Nature Center in Big Bear Lake.[2] He is also a founding board member of the Bear Valley Education Trust, receiving their Golden Apple Award in 2022.[1]

Political career

Putz's political career began with his election to the Bear Valley Unified School District Governing Board in 2008, where he served until 2012.[1] He was elected to the Big Bear Lake City Council in 2014 and re-elected in 2022.[2] He has been selected by the city council to serve as Mayor for three individual terms: 2020, 2023, and 2026.[1]

During regional weather emergencies, such as Tropical Storm Hilary in 2023, Putz acted as the municipal spokesperson on national news outlets regarding infrastructure impact and local recovery efforts.[6]

2026 State Assembly campaign

In 2025, Putz announced his candidacy for the open seat in California's 34th State Assembly District, following the redistricting and retirement transitions of the area's representation.[3] In the top-two nonpartisan primary election held on June 2, 2026, Putz placed first among the field with 37.7% of the total vote.[7] He advanced to the November 3, 2026, general election alongside Republican nominee Charles Hughes.[3]

Regional and state leadership

Putz holds several regional public service leadership roles, including:

  • Chairman: Big Bear Fire Authority and the Mountain Area Regional Transit Authority.[2]
  • League of California Cities: Putz serves on the statewide Board of Directors for the League of California Cities (Cal Cities) and previously served as President of its Desert-Mountain Division.[1]
  • Advocacy: He served as an advisor to the Southern California Montane Forests Project and represented District 11 as a Regional Councilmember for the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG).[2]

Awards

In 2023, Putz was honored with the Larry Chimbole Outstanding Public Service Award from the League of California Cities, recognizing exceptional leadership within the Desert-Mountain Division.[8] In 2024, he received the Triple Torch Award for excellence in municipal leadership.[1]

Personal life

Putz and his wife, Beth Wheat, have two children. He is a co-founder of the Big Bear Valley Trails Foundation and is an active participant in trail running and mountain biking.[2]
