Ram Dantu is a computer scientist and professor of computer science and engineering at the University of North Texas (UNT), where he directs the Center for Cyber and AI Security. His research includes cybersecurity, computer networks, telecommunications protocols, mobile systems and blockchain applications.

Career

[edit]

Dantu began his career at Allied Computers and the Indian Institute of Science before holding technology-development positions at Bell-Northern Research, Fujitsu Network Systems, Alcatel USA, IPmobile and Netrake.[1][2] His work focused on telecommunications networks and Voice over IP security. He was also a founding member and consultant at Sipera Systems.

Dantu briefly held a faculty position at the University of Texas at Dallas in 2002 before joining UNT as an assistant professor[3] in January 2003. He was promoted to professor in 2011.[4] He founded UNT's Network Security Laboratory and, beginning in 2007, became founding director of the university cybersecurity center now known as the Center for Cyber and AI Security.[5] From 2010 to 2012, he was a visiting professor in the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[1]

Research

[edit]

Dantu's research spans computer networks, cybersecurity and applications of mobile sensing.[6] His early work addressed telecommunications-network architecture, including interworking between SS7 and IP networks, signaling for Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), wireless routing, and security for Voice over IP (VoIP) and other IP multimedia services.[7][2] His VoIP research examined voice spam and methods for detecting and limiting unwanted communications.[8]

At UNT, he has conducted research on Next Generation 9-1-1 systems, including multimedia emergency communications, caller location, the security and availability of emergency-call infrastructure, and the use of smartphone sensors to collect vital signs and provide feedback during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.[9][6] Related projects have examined mobile-phone-based detection of unsafe driving and indoor navigation for blind and visually impaired people using mobile and environmental sensors.[10][11][12][13]

His later research has included security for the Internet of things, data privacy, blockchain systems and smart contracts, applications of artificial intelligence to cybersecurity, and privacy-preserving analytics for data cooperatives.[14][15][16][17] He has also worked on quantum networks and metaverse applications and security.[18][19]
