Quentin Deluermoz (born 1976) is a French historian and academic specialising in the social and cultural history of 19th-century France and Europe. He is a professor of contemporary history at Université Paris Cité and a British Academy Global Professor at the University of Cambridge (2025–2029)..

Biography

Academic Career

Deluermoz obtained his agrégation in history in 1999 and completed his doctorate at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne under the supervision of Alain Corbin and Dominique Kalifa.

He served as a lecturer at Université Paris 13 from 2009 to 2020 during which he was appointed a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (2013 - 2018). In 2020, he was appointed professor of contemporary history at Université Paris Cité. Between 2020 and 2025, he directed the research laboratories Identités, Cultures, Territoires (ICT-Les Europes dans le Monde) and ECHELLES. He has held visiting positions and invitations at several institutions and in 2025 was elected a Global Professor by the British Academy at the University of Cambridge.

Deluermoz’s research focuses on the history of policing, public order, historical methodology, and transnational perspectives on 19th-century revolutions.

His doctoral thesis Policiers dans la ville : la construction d'un ordre public à Paris, 1854-1914. was published by Éditions de la Sorbonne in 2012. The work incorporates the social interaction theories of sociologist Erving Goffman examining how the introduction of uniformed police officers altered urban life and power dynamics in Paris. The book received the Augustin-Thierry Prize from the City of Paris in 2013

In 2012, he authored Le Crépuscule des révolutions 1848-1871, the third volume of the Histoire de la France contemporaine series edited by Johann Chapoutot. In 2016, Deluermoz co-authored Pour une histoire des possibles (A Past of Possibilities) with Pierre Singaravélou, analyzing the application of counterfactual reasoning and analytical scenarios within historical writing and social sciences.

His 2020 study, Commune(s), 1870–1871, re-evaluates the Paris Commune. Writing for Books & Ideas, historian Constance Bantman noted that the book reframes the insurrection beyond traditional local interpretations by analyzing it as an event with international and imperial dimensions. The English translation was published by Verso Books in 2026 under the title The Paris Commune: A Global History.

Deluermoz co-founded the historical journal Sensibilités: Histoire, critique et sciences sociales in 2016 and has served on the editorial boards of Politix and the Revue d’histoire du 19e siècle.
