Quek Ling Kiong (Chinese: 郭勇德; born 1967), is a Singaporean conductor and percussionist. He is currently the first Singapore-born and bred Principal Conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, and the Music Director of the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra, a youth orchestra under the purview of Ministry of Education's National Project of Excellence scheme.[1][2][3]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Quek's first exposure to music was when he was studying in Dunman High School. In his school's Chinese Orchestra, he first played the liuqin, before switching to playing the percussion. Subsequently, he went to Ngee Ann Polytechnic and graduated with a diploma in buisness studies. [4][5]
When Quek was 27, with support from the National Arts Council, the Lee Foundation and Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan, he decided to pursue percussion studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Afterwhich, he joined the Singapore Chinese Orchestra as its Principal Percussionist in 1997.[4][6]
In 2007, Quek furthered his conducting studies at the Zurich University of the Arts under a National Arts Council Scholarship, and obtained a Diploma in Advanced Studies from the university.[7]
Career
[edit]Quek started his career in the Singapore Chinese Orchestra as Principal Percussionist in 1997. He subsequently became the orchestra's first Conducting Assistant in 2004, and became its Resident Conductor in 2013.[8]
In November 2022, following the retirement of then Music Director Tsung Yeh, Quek assumed position as Principal Conductor of Singapore Chinese Orchestra.[1][9]
Notable concerts Quek has led the Singapore Chinese Orchestra in include the 2014's One People Our Music Concert, which obtained 2 Guiness World Record.[10][11][12]
Besides his work in the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Quek is also the Artistic Director of The Purple Symphony, Singapore's largest inclusive orchestra established by Singapore's Community Development Council (CDC).[13][14][15] Quek is also the Music Director of the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra, and has had conducting stincts with orchestras such as the Ding Yi Music Company, and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.[16][17][18]
Awards and Recognition
[edit]Quek received the National Arts Council's Young Artist Award in 2002, awarded to outstanding Singaporean Artists aged 25 and below. Subsequently, he was National Arts Council's pioneer batch of Cultural Fellowship awardees in 2014, and received the Meritorious Award from the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS) in 2016.[19][18][20][21]
In 2019, the Singapore Management University established the Quek Ling Kiong Arts and Culture Scholarship in recognition of his contribution to the arts.[22]
In 2025, Quek received the Singapore Chinese Cultural Contribution Award, which recognises individuals who have contributed immensely to Singapore's Chinese cultural development.[23][24]
