Prema Smith is an Australian actor, R&B musician, filmmaker, restaurateur, entrepreneur and mental health advocate. He has been reported on for his work in Australian screen productions, independent music, hospitality ventures in Devonport, Tasmania, community meal initiatives, and as the founder of Self Appreciation Day.[1][2]
Early life and background
[edit]Smith was born in Sri Lanka and raised in Australia. In a 2023 interview with 3KND, he discussed his background, family life, creative career, music, screen work and advocacy around mental health and self-appreciation.[1]
Acting and film career
[edit]Smith has worked as an actor, filmmaker and director. 3KND reported that his screen credits include Cop’s Enemy, The Other Guy and The Pitch, and that he directed Cop’s Enemy.[1]
In 2023, The Advocate reported that Smith starred in a science-fiction film project connected to a proposed Tasmanian series.[3] In 2025, The Advocate reported on Smith’s move from Devonport hospitality into Sydney screen work, including his involvement with the horror-thriller Crawler.[4]
Smith has also worked in music video production. The Daily Telegraph reported that sign-wearing activist Danny Lim appeared in a music video directed by Smith.[5]
Music career
[edit]Smith is an R&B musician and singer-songwriter. His music has been profiled by 3KND and Amrap, the Australian Music Radio Airplay Project.[1][6]
In 2023, Smith released the single This Is Me. The Advocate reported on the release and described Smith as a Devonport restaurateur pursuing music while also chasing acting opportunities.[7]
A review by Sheldon Ang Media described This Is Me as a contemporary pop-fused R&B track and noted Smith’s collaboration with Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Jackie’s Boy.[8]
Hospitality and entrepreneurship
[edit]Smith owned and operated Prem’s Seafood Bar and Grill in Devonport, Tasmania. His hospitality work and restaurant ventures have been covered by The Advocate.[9][10]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, The Advocate reported that Smith provided free fish and chips to people experiencing hardship through his restaurant.[11]
In December 2023, Pulse Tasmania reported that Smith served free fish and chips and prawns outside Prem’s Seafood Bar and Grill on Christmas Eve for people needing food or holiday support.[2]
In 2024, The Advocate also reported on Smith giving back to the Devonport community through his restaurant during Easter.[12]
Self Appreciation Day
[edit]Smith founded Self Appreciation Day, an initiative focused on self-worth, self-respect, self-love and mental health awareness. The Advocate reported on the campaign in 2018, describing it as a mission to encourage people to appreciate and express their individual qualities.[13]
3KND later reported that Smith continued to advocate for awareness of mental health among communities through his music and Self Appreciation Day work.[1]
