Pim Cuijpers (born 20 November 1956)[1] is a Dutch clinical psychologist and researcher.[2] He is Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.[3] He is also director of the Collaborating Centre for Research and Dissemination of Psychological Interventions at World Health Organization. He is known for his meta-analytic research on the effectiveness of psychotherapies for depression and anxiety disorders.[4]

His h-index in Google Scholar is 224 with over 181,000 total citations.[5][6]

Early life and education

In 1980, Cuijpers completed his bachelor’s degree in psychology at Utrecht University.[2] In 1983, he compeleted his Master's degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Utrecht. He earned his PhD in Social Sciences from Radboud University Nijmegen in 1993.[7]

Career

Cuijpers worked in mental health prevention at the Netherlands Institute of Mental Health and Addiction.[2] He was later appointed Professor of Clinical Psychology at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 2004. He became a professor emeritus in 2023.[8] He served as head of the Department of Clinical Psychology and later the Department of Clinical, Neuro and Developmental Psychology. Since 2019, he has directed the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Dissemination of Psychological Interventions at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.[9] He is the editor in chief of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.[4]

Research

Cuijpers's research focuses on the efficacy of psychological interventions for common mental disorders.[10] His studies include internet-based interventions for mental health and trials on the prevention of major depressive disorder.[11]

Cuijpers has built databases of randomized controlled trials on psychotherapies for depression and anxiety disorders, updated annually.[12][13] His 2025 synthesis in Psychological Bulletin examined psychotherapy effectiveness across world regions and twelve mental health problems.[14][15] He led a trial on internet-based guided self-help for the prevention of major depressive disorder, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).[16][17]
