Life
[edit]By birth, Phul Begum, born as Rattan Bai Sahiba, was the daughter of Raja Basu, the Katoch ruler of Dhameri situated in the Kangra valley. Raja Basu enjoyed a mansab of 1500 during the reign of Akbar, which later increased to 3500 during the reign of Jahangir.[1]
As part of a marital alliance with the Katoch clan, she married Jahangir on the 28th of May, 1586. Included as part of the dowry was 2.5 lakh of gold coins sent to the Imperial clan by her father Raja Basu.[2] The marriage took place at Kangra. She was also the first Katoch clanswoman to enter the Mughal Imperial harem as consort.
