Phigros is a rhythm game developed and published by Pigeon Games. Phigros was initially released to the public globally in August 8, 2019.[1] In February 24, 2023, the official Bilibili account announced that the game had surpassed 10 million downloads.[2]
Gameplay
[edit]Phigros features several chart difficulties. All songs have Easy (EZ), Hard (HD), and Insane (IN) difficulties, while Another (AT) is available for some selected songs. Legacy charts consist of older versions of certain charts, while Special (SP) charts are used for certain hidden or event charts.[3] During gameplay, notes approach judgement lines that can move, rotate, change opacity, or otherwise change position. There are four types of notes: Tap, Hold, Drag, and Flick, each requiring a different input when reaching the judgement line.[4][3]
Notes are judged as Perfect, Good, Bad, or Miss according to the timing of the player's input. Perfect or Good judgements increase the player's combo, while Bad or Miss judgements break it.[3] The player's score is calculated from both their accuracy and their highest achieved combo. At the end of a play, the game displays the player's score, accuracy, judgement counts, highest combo, and a grade based on their score.[3]
Unlike many rhythm games, Phigros features a dynamic judgement line and does not use fixed lanes. During gameplay, the judgement line can move, rotate, or disappear, requiring players to follow its position as notes approach it. The movement of the judgement line can also be incorporated into chart patterns and visual effects.[5][6]
Development and publishing
[edit]Development of Phigros was started by Soullies, who was a teenager at the time.[7] He subsequently assembled a team of rhythm game enthusiasts, which became Pigeon Games and continued development of the game.[4] Pigeon Games distributes the game's songs without charging players individually for them and has released regular updates since the game's launch.[3][8] The game has also released special charts for April Fools' Day.[8]
The game's soundtrack primarily consists of electronic music and features compositions by numerous artists.[3][4] These include composers who have participated in the BMS music competition The BMS of Fighters, as well as artists and labels such as SOUL NOTES. Phigros has also featured collaborations with other rhythm games, like Muse Dash.[4][9] Some charts incorporate references to their source material.[3]

Reception and community
[edit]Phigros has attracted a niche but active community.[4][7] Following its release, the game appeared prominently on TapTap's "Hottest" rankings, and users on Bilibili have produced content featuring the game.[8]
Reviews have highlighted the game's level design and its use of unconventional gameplay elements. Reviewers have praised the changes in gameplay and chart design for adding variety and surprise to individual songs.[8][4][10] Other reviews have criticized the movement of gameplay elements for making charts more difficult to read and increasing their difficulty.[3][11]
The game's visual presentation has also received attention. Reviews have praised its illustrations and their relationship to the themes of individual songs and charts.[4][10] The soundtrack has similarly been highlighted for its variety and emphasis on electronic music.[4][3]
The game's free-to-play model has also been discussed by reviewers. Some have described its lack of paid access to individual songs as lowering the barrier to entry, while other discussion has focused on the game's level-unlocking system. Some players regard unlocking charts as providing a sense of progression, while others have criticized it as limiting player choice.[8][11]
Phigros's visual effects and interface have also influenced user-generated content on short-video platforms. In 2024, 36Kr reported on the use of effects inspired by Phigros in "beat-synced dance" videos on Douyin.[12]
