Phelian is an American electronic music producer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer based in New Orleans, Louisiana.[1] Active since late 2015, his work is associated with the underground electronic music community, characterized by a combination of ambient future garage, cinematic soundscapes, deep bass structures, and pitch-shifted vocal compositions.[2] In addition to electronic music production, he composes minimalist solo piano and atmospheric dark ambient works.[1]
He initially gained prominence within his genre following the release of his debut studio album, Luna (2017), and his sophomore LP, Quadrivium, on March 31, 2018.[3] He has maintained a long-standing association with the independent record label Insight Music and released his third studio album, Beside You, on September 18, 2019, via Enhanced Music.[4]
Live performances
[edit]On October 31, 2019, Phelian performed a live set at The Howlin' Wolf in New Orleans, Louisiana, featuring a selection of original compositions accompanied by custom visual projections.[5] The performance was cataloged by regional music publication OffBeat Magazine as part of its recommended citywide musical programming for Halloween night.[6]
Musical style
[edit]Phelian's signature sound features future garage elements embedded within sprawling, ethereal atmospheres.[4] In a historical analysis of the genre by music publication Stereofox, Phelian was noted as a core figure of the late-2010s "coming-of-age" era of future garage, credited with expanding the sound sonically and geographically beyond its traditional UK boundaries as a key representative from the United States.[7]
His compositions heavily feature minor key chord progressions, rich reverb, organic foley drums, and complex vocal chopping where themes of melancholy and solace intersect.[2] Regarding his creative process and technical workflow, he has stated a preference for generating soundscapes and textures from raw materials rather than pre-assembled sample loops.[8] He has cited a diverse range of artistic influences on his compositional mindset, varying from ambient and wave electronic acts like Vacant and Pensees to alternative rock groups like Tool and neo-classical composers like Joep Beving.[4][2]
