Peter Raymond Flatt MBE MRIA is a British scientist and Professor of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Ulster University.[1] His research has focused on pancreatic islet function, the incretin and other gut hormones, and peptide-based approaches to the treatment of diabetes and obesity.[2][3]
Education
[edit]Flatt holds a BSc (Hons) and a PhD from Aston University.[4]
In 2018 he received a DSc from Ulster University for works on Gut hormones and peptide therapeutics for diabetes.[5][3]
Career
[edit]Flatt was a research fellow at Uppsala University before taking up an academic post at the University of Surrey in 1980.[1] He moved to Ulster University in 1989, where he has served as Director of the Biomedical Sciences Research Centre (1992–1994) and Head of the School of Biomedical Sciences (1994–1997), and leads the Diabetes Research Group.[1]
Research
[edit]Flatt's research covers pancreatic islet function[6], hormone secretion, regulatory peptides, glucose-lowering drugs[7] and experimental diabetes. A major strand of his work has concerned the incretin hormones GLP-1 and GIP,[8] including the development and study of structurally modified peptide analogues[9] for diabetes and obesity.
Honours
[edit]Flatt was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy in 2006[10] and was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2025 Birthday Honours for services to diabetes research.[11][12][13].
