Florence Pauline "Pauli" Gardose Basubas is a Filipina space biologist, analog astronaut, and researcher whose work focuses on microgravity research, space medicine, and space sustainability. She has gained national recognition in the Philippines as an aspiring astronaut and science communicator, advocating for Filipino representation in the aerospace community and STEM fields.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Pauli Basubas was born to Filipino parents Paul and Floravic Basubas, the second out of four children. She was raised in Cebu, Philippines. She comes from a family of farmers in Cebu and Mindanao. [1]
She attended Cebu City National Science High School for her secondary studies. She earned her bachelor's degree at Minerva University, graduating magna cum laude with a double major in Natural Sciences (Applied Biochemistry) and Social Sciences (Global Development and Government Studies). She completed her master's degree at Universitat Pompeu Fabra.[2]
Scientific Career
[edit]Basubas specializes in space biology and space medicine, focusing on how extreme space conditions affect living systems. She has published papers on microgravity and cell biology, microgravity materials and payloads, and regional space policy and sustainability.[3]
She rose to prominence after announcing her bid on Tiktok and other social media platforms for a seat on a New Shepard suborbital flight through the Space Exploration & Research Agency (SERA)'s partnership with Blue Origin. Aiming to be the First Filipino astronaut, she built an extensive background by graduating from NASA Adult Space Academy and joining analog missions such as the Monsaraz Mars Analog Mission in Portugal where she served as the Executive and Medical Officer. Pauli also met Philippine President Bongbong Marcos at the Malacañang Palace together with other Filipino analog astronauts during a courtesy call on September 24, 2025. [5]
A documentary, To the Moon and Back, features Basubas as a protagonist navigating her journey towards her dream of becoming an astronaut. It was premiered in Visions du Réel 2026 in Nyon, Switzerland.[6]
