Paul Treyvaud is an Irish restauranteur, celebrity chef and political commentator. After growing up in Dublin, he moved to Kerry, where he opened Treyvaud's Restaurant in Killarney with his brother. After being scouted for his cooking content by Simon Cowell and Jamie Oliver, he hosted the cooking shows Cooking with Treyvaud (2014), Treyvaud’s Kitchen and Treyvaud Travels (2015-2017).

Treyvaud spoke out about the plight of the small businessman during the COVID-19 lockdowns in Ireland in 2021. He soon became prominently featured in Irish media for his views on public health, international protection policy and electoral governance. His pronouncements have garnered him popular support while being cited by online fact assessors as conspiracy theories and misinformation.

Early and personal life

Treyvaud is the son of Gresham Hotel head chef Michel Treyvaud.[1] He struggled with school as a child while attending St Brigid's National School, Castleknock and Clonkeen College in Dublin,[2] but participated enthusiastically in football, GAA, athletics and other sports.[3] He overcame a childhood fear of the opposite sex marry his wife Elaine in 2004[2] (which he would later refer to as his "best haggle"[4]) and to father two sons, Sean and Dylan.[3] As of 2014, he lived in Kenmare, County Kerry with his pet sea otter.[2]

Treyvaud owns, with his brother Mark, Treyvaud's Restaurant in Killarney Town.[3] He is frequently featured in the Irish media for his opinions on the restaurant business, including taste trends,[5] restaurant cancellation fees,[6] staff shortages,[7] and VAT rates.[8] Efforts by Treyvaud to drive business to the restaurant include becoming an ordained minister to officiate weddings,[9] and setting a policy on required genitals for customers to access the restaurant's bathrooms.[10][11] He has publicly spoken out against frequent terrible reviews the restaurant has received, remarking of the customers that "I think they are sad f*****s to be honest".[12] Author J. K. Rowling is a prominent customer of the restaurant.[13]

Lockdown showdown

Forseeing the imminent failure of his restaurant business in June 2021 during Ireland's COVID-19 lockdown, Treyvaud threatened, at the risk of his own arrest, to re-open his restaurant on July 1, 2021 regardless of whether it would be legal to do so, and called on other businesspeople to join his pledge.[14][15] Despite attracting the public support of Kerry TD Danny Healy Rae,[16] Treyvaud backtracked on the threat after being dismissed as "mad", citing fear of state repression of his customers, and defying critics, saying "I’m far from a bluffer".[17]

After posting "unorthodox" videos of his cooking to YouTube, Treyvaud entered a 2013 search for talent by Simon Cowell and Jamie Oliver among performing pets, stylists and singers, and finished in the final four.[19] He went on to the host the television shows Cooking with Treyvaud (2014), Treyvaud’s Kitchen and Treyvaud Travels (2015-2017), the latter two of which were released on Amazon Prime interntionally and aired on Virgin Media Television domestically.[3] After the conclusion of his television career, Treyvaud pivoted to launching an OnlyFans account for paid subscribers, showcasing his cooking and struggles with weight loss.[20]

Political commentary

Treyvaud is a prominent commentator on Irish public affairs, advertising his content as "for people that are sick and tired of the PC muppets out there", and notably was a central figure in opposition to the Irish government response to the COVID-19 pandemic.[21][22][23]

COVID-19 lockdown criticism

After objecting to being repeatedly called nonessential by the Taoiseach, he was invited to speak in front of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport and Media in June 2021.[24] He spoke in front of the Committee against vaccination requirements for diners, after claiming to have had 500 customers cancel bookings at his restaurant in a day.[25][26] He criticised the media for not asking questions of the government's public health measures, commenting "If we were to listen to public health advice forever, we would have been wiped out decades ago because of AIDS - because they told us none of us should have been riding each other anymore."[27] Treyvaud's public rhetoric on COVID-19 was cited as an example of online disinformation in a Health Service Executive report, which Treyvaud criticised as surveillance.[28]

International protection, race riots and electoral governance

Treyvaud has prominently opined about the effects of immigration on tourism,[21][29][30] the inevitability of race riots,[31] and the appropriateness of drag queen conduct within the zoo industry.[32] A 2024 review by The Journal's Fact Check of Treyvaud's social media posts about corruption in refugees and asylym seekers being able to vote found that he had disseminated unfounded conspiracy theory misinformation.[33] Treyvaud's claims that the Ballymena riots were "the start of things to come" drew media attention in June 2025.[31] He was a leading member of right-wing commentators described by The Irish Times as the "creative crayoning crew" who called for the electorate to spoil their vote in the 2025 Irish presidential election after their preferred candidate Maria Steen failed to secure sufficent support for a nomination.[21][34][35]
