Paloma Benach is an American professional baseball pitcher.

Early life and education

[edit]

Her parents founded D.C. Girl's Baseball because of her desire to bring baseball for girls to Washington D.C. after she played on an all-girls team which won predominantly male tournament in Orange County. "We just started gathering girls slowly to create teams and just play wherever we could. And now it’s a full organization that is fostering four or five teams."[1] At age 12, Benach was interviewed by WAMU, along with one of her coaches and another player, about her experience as a girl playing Little League baseball and then moving to the all-girls league founded by her parents,[2] and at 17, she expressed in a Washington Post interview and feature article about her that she wanted to continue playing baseball as long as possible, despite a lack of professional options for women players at the time.[3]

Baseball career

[edit]

In 2019, Benach was chosen as one of two Washington, D.C.-area players to participate in the inaugural High School Girls Baseball Invitational, a development camp run jointly by Major League Baseball and USA Baseball.[4] Benach was the first woman to play as part of Occidental University's baseball team.[5] She currently plays for the Boston Hunters of the Women's Pro Baseball League.[6] During the inaugural season, Benach struck out during the final inning of the game in which the Firebells clinched first place for the regular season. [7]

Personal life
