"Open A Window" is a song by English singer-songwriter Rex Orange County featuring American rapper Tyler, the Creator. It was released on March 9, 2022, as the third single from Rex Orange County's fourth studio album Who Cares?.
Background and release
[edit]"Open A Window" was the third collaboration between Rex Orange County and Tyler, the Creator. The two previously worked together on Tyler's 2017 album Flower Boy, where Rex Orange County appeared on the songs "Boredom" and "Foreword".[1] The song was released during the promotion of Who Cares?, which followed Rex Orange County's 2019 album Pony. Before "Open A Window", he released "Keep It Up" and "Amazing" as singles from the album.[2]
Composition
[edit]"Open A Window" opens with a prominent bassline and features light orchestration with a 1970s-inspired sound.[3] NME described the song as a "jazzy" collaboration,[4] while AllMusic noted that it evokes the sound of Stevie Wonder.[5]
Reception
[edit]NPR highlighted the song's bassline and praised Tyler's verse over Benny Sings' production.[3] Billboard noted the chemistry between the two artists and described Tyler's contribution as a short but prominent verse[1] The Fader described the song as a reminder to take a break and focus on self-care.[6]
Connie Burke of The Independent praised the combination of Rex's vocals, relaxed R&B-influenced production and Tyler's verse. She also viewed the song as a change from the more melancholic approach of some of his earlier work.[7] The Michigan Daily included "Open A Window" among the more interesting songs on Who Cares?, citing its deeper instrumentation and Tyler's feature.[8]
