ONEONTA CONCERT ASSOCIATION CONCERT

History

In the summer of 1928, representatives from New York City's Community Concerts came to Oneonta to discuss their plan for bringing quality concerts to cities throughout the United States. Mrs. David H. Mills, a musician, was approached and was attracted to the idea. Other residents joined Mrs. Mills in planning for this new community organization. The Oneonta Community Concert Association was formed in December 1928. According to a story in The Oneonta Herald, on December 13, 1928, a committee was selected, with Roscoe C. Briggs as chairman, the Hon. Charles Smith, treasurer, and W.W. Capron, secretary. Additional committee members were Mayor B.C. Lauren, Dr. George J. Dana, Owen C. Becker, Mrs. Lee D. VanWoert and Mrs. David Mills. Many community organizations: (Rotary, Kiwanis, Women's Club, Business Women's Club, Elks, Masons, Oneonta Normal School, Hartwick College, Oneonta Club, YMCA, IOOF, American Legion, Ministers' Association) and a long list of individuals were consulted. The Oneonta Herald reported: "Steps that will assure this city three or more high grade musical events each winter season, with a minimum of effort, to be given by a representative ... group of citizens, were taken ... at the mayor's office in the formation of the Oneonta Community Concerts' Association. The purpose of the organization is to form a membership group which will form a permanent audience for these concerts, after the plan of the Community Concerts' corporation of New York City.
