Okada Shigeyoshi (岡田 重善 / 岡田 重能, 1527 – May 17, 1583), also known by his court title Okada Nagato-no-kami, was a Japanese samurai commander of the Sengoku period. He served as a military retainer to the Oda clan of Owari Province under Oda Nobuhide, Oda Nobunaga, and subsequently Oda Nobukatsu.
Biography
[edit]Service under Oda Nobuhide and Nobunaga
[edit]Shigeyoshi was a member of the Okada clan based in Owari Province, tracing their lineage back to the Yamada clan of the Owari Genji branch. He entered the service of Oda Nobuhide during the Oda clan's territorial expansion against the rival Imagawa clan.In 1542, Shigeyoshi participated in the First Battle of Azukizaka. Following the engagement, he was recognized alongside six other commanders—including Oda Nobumitsu and Sassa Masatsugu—as one of the "Seven Spears of Azukizaka" (小豆坂の七本槍) for his distinction in vanguard combat.[1] Following Nobuhide's death, Shigeyoshi served Oda Nobunaga for several decades as a senior retainer and commander during the unification of Owari Province and the early campaigns to unify central Japan. During his service, he held residence at Hoshizaki Castle in southern Owari.
Later Life and Succession
[edit]Following the assassination of Oda Nobunaga in the Honnō-ji Incident in June 1582, Shigeyoshi pledged allegiance to Nobunaga's second son, Oda Nobukatsu (also known as Oda Nobuo).Shigeyoshi died on May 17, 1583. His estate and position as lord of Hoshizaki Castle passed to his eldest son, Okada Shigetaka, who went on to serve as one of the three chief councilors (karō) to Oda Nobukatsu.
Cultural Legacy
[edit]Shigeyoshi was noted in historical records not only for his military prowess but also for his literary inclinations. The Edo-period scholar Oze Hoan recorded in the Taikōki that Shigeyoshi was skilled in waka poetry (kadō) and classical conversation, maintaining close personal relationships with contemporary scholars and cultural figures.
