Octopus Legacy is a British company that provides estate planning, probate, and bereavement support services. It was founded in 2017 as Guardian Angel by Sam Grice, following the death of his mother, and is headquartered in London. The company has been part of the Octopus Group, a British asset management company, since 2022, and was subsequently renamed Octopus Legacy.[1]
History
[edit]Guardian Angel was founded in 2017 by Sam Grice. The company initially provided digital tools intended to help people manage the administrative tasks that follow a death.[1][2]
By 2020, it began offering estate planning services, including online will-writing and support for Lasting Powers of Attorney.[2]
In 2022, Guardian Angel was acquired by the Octopus Group and was subsequently renamed Octopus Legacy.[1]
In 2024, Octopus Legacy entered the life insurance market through the acquisition of the technology assets of DeadHappy.[3]
In 2025, it launched a bereavement concierge service and the Legacy Box, a physical box for storing important documents and personal mementos, and acquired WSL Will Writing.[2][4][5]
In 2026, it acquired the private client team of NewLaw Solicitors.[6]
Products and services
[edit]Octopus Legacy provides estate planning services, including online and in-person will-writing, trust creation, and support for Lasting Powers of Attorney, delivered by estate planners and solicitors.[1][2] It also offers probate and estate administration through Octopus Legal Services, a regulated law firm launched in January 2025.[7] Following its 2024 acquisition of the technology assets of DeadHappy, the company entered the life insurance market.[3] Its other services include a bereavement concierge service and the Legacy Box, a box for storing documents and personal mementos.[2][5]
Through partnerships with UK charities, Octopus Legacy offers free or subsidised will-writing, through which customers may choose to include charitable gifts in their wills.[8][9]
Technology and innovation
[edit]Octopus Legacy operates in what its founder, Sam Grice, has called the "death tech" sector, using technology to handle administrative aspects of estate planning and probate.[7][10]
Charity partnerships and fundraising
[edit]Octopus Legacy partners with over 150 UK charities, including Macmillan, ActionAid UK, RSPB, WWF-UK, RNIB and the Canal & River Trust.[8][9]
The company provides free or subsidised will-writing services funded by charities. Participants may optionally include charitable gifts in their wills.[8][9]
Awards
[edit]Octopus Legacy has received awards at the British Wills and Probate Awards, including Customer Service Champions, Estate Planning Firm of the Year - Large, Best Place to Work, and Wills and Probate Excellence.[11]
