Nuruddeen Muhammad (born 20 August 1976) is a Nigerian Physician–diplomat, former minister, politician, social entrepreneur, global health practitioner, and grassroots development non-profit leader.

He served as Nigeria's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs[1] from 2011 to 2015 under President Goodluck Jonathan, and as supervising Minister of Information between 2014–2015.[2]. He is the founder and chairman of Unik Impact Foundation [3] and Sawaba FM Radio Hadejia. [4]

Early life and education

Muhammad was born on 20 August 1976 in Hadejia, Jigawa State, Nigeria. He attended Dubantu Primary School in Hadejia, Jigawa State and Science College Dawakin Kudu, Kano. He obtained a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from College of Medicine Bayero University Kano in 2003. He began his residency training in Psychiatry at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in 2006, where he earned a Membership of the West African College of Physicians (MWACP) in 2009 and later the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Psychiatry (FMCPsych) in 2013. He completed an MSc in Global Health & Development at the University College London (UCL) in 2025.

Medical Career

He undertook his internship at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in 2003-2004 and National Youth Service Corps at Osun Government House Clinic, Osogbo (2004–2005). He worked as a Medical Officer in Ringim General Hospital in Jigawa State between 2005 to 2006 and later at the Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kudu up to June 2006. Between 2006-2011 he worked as a resident doctor with the Department of Psychiatry, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. He also worked part time with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) programme in Jahun, Jigawa State from 2009-2011.

Dr Muhammad was appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Nigeria in the Cabinet of Goodluck Jonathan in 2011.[1]

As Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Muhammad oversaw African matters, including oversight in regional and continental organisations, development cooperation, collective defence and security matters, bilateral relations, peace, mediation and conflict resolutions, Technical Aid Corp (TAC), and the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa (DTCA). In this capacity, he has represented Nigeria at the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), including in peace negotiations, international development funding, south-south partnerships, and security and humanitarian interventions. Highlights include:

  • International Development Cooperation and Funding; supervised the allocation and disbursement of Nigeria’s international development and cooperation assistance, facilitating initiatives across West Africa through leadership of the Nigeria’s ECOWAS National Unit. [5] [6] [7]

  • He addressed a World Press conference in December 2014 amidst local and international concerns about the Boko Haram insurgency and concerns 2015 general elections in Nigeria.[40][41]

  • National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) licensed about 100 private radio and television stations after years of moratorium.[44][45][46]

Grassroots Development, Social Entrepreneurship and Humanitarian Work

Muhammad founded the Unik Impact Foundation in 2015, a Nigerian non-governmental organisation working in healthcare, education, humanitarian relief and youth development. In 2017 he founded Sawaba FM 104.9 Radio Hadejia, a community radio station in Hadejia, Jigawa State.

Electoral Politics

Dr Muhammad resigned[47] [48] his dual cabinet role in February 2015 to contest as the running mate to the Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate in Jigawa State in the 2015 general election.[49] He won the PDP senatorial ticket for Jigawa Northeast in 2022 and contested the seat in the 2023 general election, finishing second with about 44% of the total votes cast according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (Nigeria).[50][51]
