Northfields International School is a private international school located on Main Road, Labourdonnais Village, in the village of Mapou, Rivière du Rempart District, in the north of Mauritius. The school offers the full International Baccalaureate continuum from early childhood through to pre-university level and is part of Inspired Education Group, a London-headquartered operator of private schools across six continents.

Location

[edit]

Northfields is located on Main Road in Labourdonnais Village, a locality within the village of Mapou in the Rivière du Rempart District of northern Mauritius. Mapou lies approximately 14 kilometres north-east of Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius, and is administered by the Mapou Village Council under the Rivière du Rempart District Council.

The Rivière du Rempart District covers the north-east of the island and has a population of approximately 108,000. The school's immediate surroundings include the Château de Labourdonnais, a colonial estate whose main house dates from 1859, set on grounds originally established in 1777. The motorway serving the north of the island passes close to Mapou, connecting it to Port Louis and the main population centres of Pamplemousses District to the west.

History

[edit]

Northfields was founded in 2001 by a group of eight parents based in northern Mauritius who sought an English-medium international school in the north of the island. At the time, the only comparable institution required a journey of approximately two and a half hours each way for children living in the north. During its first months of operation the school was housed within the facilities of the International Preparatory School (IPS) before moving to independent premises in Mapou. The school opened in September 2001 with nine pupils.

The school subsequently expanded to include both a primary and secondary section on a dedicated campus at Labourdonnais Village. At the time of its early growth it was one of only two schools in Mauritius offering the IGCSE qualification, alongside [[Le Bocage International School]].

The IB Diploma Programme was first authorised at the school in December 2006, making Northfields one of the earliest IB World Schools in Mauritius.[1]

In 2017, the school announced the opening of a boarding facility, described at the time as the first of its kind in Mauritius, with capacity for 32 resident pupils during term time.[2]

In August 2024, Northfields was acquired by Inspired Education Group, a co-educational, non-denominational private schools group founded in 2013 and headquartered in London. The acquisition was Inspired's first school in Mauritius.[3]
