Nizamuddin Shah is an Indian actor, writer, director and theatre artist. He is the founder of the Mumbai-based street theatre group Young Creative Production and appeared in a supporting role in the Netflix film Yeh Ballet (2020).
Early life
[edit]Shah grew up in the Wadala area of Mumbai. He is the elder brother of ballet dancer Amiruddin Shah, one of the real-life inspirations for the character Asif in Yeh Ballet.[1][2]
Career
[edit]Theatre
[edit]Shah is the founder of Young Creative Production (formerly known as Jannat Media Production), a street theatre (nukkad natak) group based in Mumbai. The group performs in slums and villages across Maharashtra on social issues including addiction, child labour, domestic violence, sanitation, mental health, tuberculosis, cleanliness and COVID-19 awareness.[1][2]
According to reports, the group was formed around 2011 and has conducted more than 10,000 street performances. Many of its performers come from low-income backgrounds, and the group has worked with young people recovering from substance abuse. Shah has trained hundreds of participants from Mumbai’s slums, some of whom later pursued acting professionally.[1][2]
Acting
[edit]Shah made his screen debut in the short film Jaya (2015). He appeared as Asif’s brother in Sooni Taraporevala’s Netflix original film Yeh Ballet (2020), a fictionalised account of the lives of Amiruddin Shah and Manish Chauhan.[1][2]
He later appeared as Gunner LD Dhaneswar in the war film Pippa (2023) and worked as a camera operator on the documentary Call Me Dancer (2023).
Filmmaking
[edit]In 2026, Shah wrote and directed the short biographical documentary Doctor Amma (21 minutes), which profiles physician Dr. C. Rajeswari. A special screening was held on 9 September 2026 at Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital in Nava Raipur, Chhattisgarh.[3]
