Nirmala Chongtham (born 1961) is an Indian botanist. She is a Professor in the Department of Botany at Panjab University, Chandigarh, India.[1][2] Her research focuses on the nutritional value, chemical components, and food processing methods of bamboo shoots. Her research publications have been cited over 3,600 times in academic literature, with an h-index of 29.[3]

Early life and education

Chongtham was born in Manipur, India, to parents C.I. Singh and Kumudini Devi. She grew up in the Wahengbam Leikai locality of Imphal.[4] She went to the Little Flower School in Imphal and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Botany Honors from Dhanamanjuri College of Science, which was affiliated with Manipur University, in 1983.[3]

She received her Master of Science degree in Botany from Kurukshetra University in 1986. In 1991, she completed her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the same university with a thesis titled "Investigation on male sterile pea".

Chongtham later worked as a post-doctoral researcher in plant biotechnology at the University of Hannover, Germany, under a DAAD fellowship.[2] She also completed a biotechnology training fellowship in Leipzig supported by the Deutsche Stiftung für internationale Entwicklung (DSE).[2]

Career and research

Chongtham started working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Botany at Kurukshetra University in 1991.[1] In 2000, she moved to Panjab University, Chandigarh as an Associate Professor, and became a Full Professor in 2008.[1][5] She has supervised more than 25 Ph.D. students during her tenure.[5]

Her research group has studied the nutritional profiles of more than 25 bamboo species.[5] Her papers evaluate how specific boiling and processing methods reduce antinutrients like cyanogenic glycosides in fresh shoots while retaining dietary fibers.[6] Her highly-cited 2018 review on bamboo antioxidants in Trends in Food Science & Technology has received nearly 400 citations.[7] Other primary papers tracking nutrient changes in juvenile shoots have received over 190 citations.[8][9]

Her laboratory's animal model research regarding bamboo shoots and their effects on liver protection and diabetes management has been covered by the newspaper Amar Ujala.[10][11] In 2019, her research career was the focus of a two-part radio talk show on All India Radio Imphal titled "English Talk: Amidst the Bending Clumps".[12][13]

Associations and awards

The World Bamboo Organization (WBO) named Chongtham a World Bamboo Ambassador from India in 2015.[4] She served as the Chair of the Technical Committee for the 10th World Bamboo Congress in South Korea (2015) and Co-Chair for the congress in Mexico (2018).[4]

She was the National Coordinator for the 3rd World Bamboo Workshop held in Imphal, Manipur, in February 2019.[14][15] She also speaks on policy frameworks aimed at growing the regional bamboo economic sector.[16]

In 2025, she was given the Bans Bhushan Award at the 1st Rastriya Bans Utsav at IIT Bombay for her work on using processed bamboo applications to address dietary deficiencies.[17]
