Nida A. Collado is a Filipina environmental advocate and a community-based organizer who serves as the president of the National Federation of People’s Organizations holding Community-Based Forest Management Agreements (CBFMAs).[1] She is also the President of the Palawan Federation of CBFM/CADC Holders Association [2] and the Macatumbalen Community Based Forest and Management Association (MCBFCMA). [3] In addition, she serves as the official Civil Society Organization (CSO) Representative on environmental technical working groups in Palawan. [4]
MCBFCMA is a women-led people's organization established in the early 2000s and based in Sitio Macatumbalen, Barangay Poblacion, San Vicente, Palawan, Philippines. [5] [6] [7]

Career
[edit]Collado assumed the presidency of MCBFCMA in the year 2002.[8] By 2009, she directed projects in collaboration with both governmental and non-governmental organizations.[9] [10]
She has worked on community-based forest and mangrove conservation. This includes organizing local community groups and educating farmers on the environmental impacts of slash-and-burn agriculture (kaingin).[10] [11] The MCBFCMA manages 1,850 hectares of forest land in San Vicente, Palawan. [12]
The Non-Timber Forest Products – Exchange Programme (NTFP-EP) reported that the organization manages a 1,450-hectare strict protection zone, has replanted more than 300 hectares of degraded land under the National Greening Program, and allocates approximately 400 hectares to the production of timber and non-timber forest products.[12]
The organization also implemented community-based initiatives to restore denuded mangroves, establishing interconnected zones that are designated and managed by individual village communities.[3] [9] [7]
Awards and Recognitions
[edit]During Collado's current tenure as president, both she and the MCBFCMA received recognition for their work in community-based forest management and environmental conservation.
Individual Recognitions
[edit]In 2016, Collado was awarded the Best People's Organization Environmentalist in Palawan. [12]
In 2021, she was recognized as the Gawad Ulirang Ina (Model Mother) of Palawan, presented by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Puerto Princesa Oil, in partnership with NCCC Mall Palawan and Palawan Daily News. [13]
In 2023, Collado received the Philippine Resilience Award and the Gender Equality, Women's Empowerment, and Climate Change Award in recognition of her contributions to climate resilience and gender-responsive development. [14] [15] [16] She was subsequently awarded the 2024 Wangari Maathai Forest Champion Award, which was presented by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests and chaired by the Food and Agriculture Organization during the 27th Session of the Committee on Forestry in Rome, Italy. Recognitions received by MCBFCMA under Collado's management
[edit]In 2018, MCBFCMA was among 15 people's organizations recognized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) during the 3rd Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) Practitioners' Congress for its achievements in community-based forest management, including livelihood and enterprise development and forest conservation.[18]
In 2022, MCBFCMA was recognized as the Best Community-Based Forest Management Peoples Organization by the Palawan Provincial Environment and Natural Resource Office. [19]
