There is a heap of prestige terms, "first individual", "model mother"; her management style is framed in achievements with no mis-steps; a list of numbers of trees (etc) all intended to point to success. Nida A. Collado is a Filipina environmentalist and farmer who serves as the president of the Macatumbalen Community-Based Forest and Coastal Management Association (MCBFCMA) in Palawan, Philippines.[1] She is the recipient of the global 2024 Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award, presented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

She serves as the president of the National Federation of People’s Organizations holding Community-Based Forest Management Agreements (CBFMAs).[1][2] She is also the President of the Palawan Federation of CBFM/CADC Holders Association,[3] as well as the official Civil Society Organization (CSO) Representative on environmental technical working groups in Palawan.[4]

Collado and her work based in Sitio Macatumbalen, Barangay Poblacion, San Vicente, Palawan.[5][6]

Under her management, the association secured a 25-year Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) agreement in 2002 to manage and conserve 1,850 hectares (4,571 acres) of forest land.[7][8]

Career

Collado became president of MCBFCMA in 2002, securing a 25-year agreement to manage 1,850 hectares of forest land.[7] By 2009, she began directing joint projects with governmental and non-governmental organizations focusing on community-based forest management and mangrove conservation.[9][10]

During her tenure, the land managed by the association was categorized into specific zones, including a 1,450-hectare strict protection zone and 300 hectares of reforested land under the National Greening Program, as reported by the NTFP - EP.[8] Her work involved organizing local community groups to address the environmental impacts of slash-and-burn agriculture (kaingin) and establishing localized women-led conservation groups.[10][11]

Collado has also established interconnected zones that are designated and managed by individual village communities.[1][9][6]

Awards and recognitions

  • 2018: MCBFCMA recognized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources at the 3rd Community-Based Forest Management Practitioners' Congress.[12]
  • 2021: Received the local Gawad Ulirang Ina (Model Mother) recognition.[13]
  • 2022: MCBFCMA named the Best Community-Based Forest Management People's Organization by the Palawan Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office.[14]
  • 2023: Recipient of the Philippine Resilience Award and the Gender Equality, Women's Empowerment, and Climate Change Award.[15][16][17]
  • 2024: Awarded the Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests.[10][18]
