Nicola Harding (born March 1977)[1] is a British interior designer and the founder of Nicola Harding & Co, a London-based interior design studio established in 2008.[2][3] She is known for interiors across residential, hospitality and commercial projects, and for founding the furniture and homeware brand NiX in 2023.[4] House & Garden has credited her with an "impressive use of colour and joinery" across projects ranging from country houses to hotels, describing her style as a contemporary take on classical forms built around well-sourced antiques and a commitment to sustainable practice.[5]

She has been described as one of the UK's most in-demand interior designers[6] whose firm is regularly recognised as one of Britain's leading design practices.[3]

Early life and training

Harding grew up in a military family — her father was a helicopter pilot — and moved frequently as a child, living in a series of identical, standard-issue houses.[7][6] She studied theology at the University of Edinburgh, and before settling on a career in design, she trained in aviation and considered joining the military.[3] She went on to complete a diploma in garden design at KLC School of Design in London,[2] and worked with garden designer Arne Maynard for five years before establishing her own design practice.[2][8]

Career

Harding founded her design practice as a sole trader in 2008. The company Nicola Harding Interior & Garden Design Ltd was incorporated on 2 August 2010.[1] Orla Read joined as a director in 2016, and the company was renamed Harding and Read Ltd in February 2018.[1] Read left the company in April 2020 to establish her own practice, and the business was renamed Nicola Harding & Co Ltd the following month.[1]

During the Harding and Read period, the studio's work included a family home spanning three combined flats in a nineteenth-century house in Notting Hill, featured in House & Garden's June 2019 issue and again in a 2021 online gallery.[9][10][11] The studio also restored an eighteenth-century house at Somerset Place, Bath, previously used as university student accommodation, working alongside architect Jonathan Rhind.[12][13][14] The project appeared on the cover of House & Garden's March 2018 issue and AD Germany's November 2018 issue, as well as the cover of Homes & Interiors Scotland's May/June 2023 issue.[12][13][14]

As of 2025, the studio employed a 15-person team.[15] Harding's husband, Andy Harding, has been a director of Nicola Harding & Co Ltd since June 2022.[1]

Residential projects

  • A Jacobean manor house in Northamptonshire, which won UK Residential Project of the Year at the Homes & Gardens Design Awards 2023[16] and appeared on the cover of House & Garden's May 2023 issue[17]
  • A Tuscan farmhouse renovation for an Italian-American couple, near olive groves in the Tuscan countryside.[18][19] The Tuscan farmhouse project appeared on the cover of Homes & Gardens' May 2025 issue and Country & Town House's Interiors annual, 2026/27.[18][20]
  • A five-bedroom Arts and Crafts house in Oxfordshire, renovated with architect Billy Sinclair of Sinclair Studios, featured on the cover of House & Garden's September 2025 issue[21]
  • A 7,000-square-foot new-build timber-framed chalet in rural England, commissioned by clients who first discovered Harding’s work during an extended stay at Beaverbrook Townhouse, a hotel in London, which she had also designed.[22]
  • A Georgian-style country house in Berkshire[23]
  • An 18th-century house on the banks of the River Thames, redesigned as a weekend family home[24]

  • The Cavendish Hotel, Baslow, Derbyshire, refurbished by Harding in partnership with Laura Cavendish, Countess of Burlington, and named Hotel of the Year in The Times and The Sunday Times' 100 Best Places to Stay in the UK guide, 2025[25][26]
  • Beaverbrook Town House, London, a 14-room hotel with interiors inspired by London theatre[27]
  • The Garden House and Dower House at Beaverbrook, Surrey, and the estate's Mickleham Downs cottages[28][29]
  • The Mitre, a boutique hotel on the River Thames at Hampton Court[28]
  • Penmaenuchaf, a Victorian country house hotel in Gwynedd, North Wales[30]
  • The Rose, an eight-room boutique hotel in Deal, Kent, converted from a historic pub by Harding and Read in collaboration with designer Michelle Kelly[31][32]


In 2024, the Dower House at Beaverbrook won Best Craft of Color at the Homes & Gardens Design Awards, and Harding served as the Furniture, Lighting & Accessories judge on that year's awards panel.[33]

In 2025, five Nicola Harding & Co-designed hotels were named in The Times and The Sunday Times' 100 Best Places to Stay in the UK guide, including the Cavendish Hotel at Baslow, named overall Hotel of the Year.[25][26] The Rose (Deal, Kent) and Beaverbrook (Surrey) were named Best Boutique Hotel and Best Blow-the-Budget Hotel respectively in the same guide.[25]

Publications

Harding published her first monograph, Nicola Harding: Homing Instinct (Rizzoli, September 2025), co-written with journalist Busola Evans and with a foreword by textile designer Christine Vanderhurd.[36] The book profiles nine of Harding's residential projects, including a Georgian townhouse, a Tuscan villa and her own family home.[36][19] The Arts and Crafts house in Oxfordshire and the English chalet project are both among the projects featured in the book.[21][22]

House Beautiful named it one of the Best New Design Books of 2025, calling it "a master class in pattern mixing and playful palettes."[37] Veranda included it in its Best Design Books of 2025, describing it as a "quintessentially British design book."[38] Domino featured an excerpt from the book's chapter on a historic Tuscan villa renovation.[19]

NiX by Nicola Harding

In 2023, Harding launched NiX by Nicola Harding, a furniture, lighting and homeware brand extending her design studio's aesthetic into retail, with a showroom in Queen's Park, London.[4][35] The brand is operated by NiX Living Ltd, co-founded and run alongside her husband, Andy Harding, who has been a director since the company's incorporation on 4 July 2022.[39]

NiX launched first with a lighting collection, and has since expanded to include upholstered furniture, dining tables, beds and fabrics made in the Midlands.[40] Pieces from the collection, including the Tuck In dining table, the Raconteur table and the Folly four-poster bed, have been used across Harding's own interior design projects, including at Penmaenuchaf.[22][30] Harding has described the brand as a more accessible counterpart to her interior design practice, with pieces frequently inspired by antiques sourced for past projects.[40]
