The name Neogammarus Ruffo, 1937 is unavailable for nomenclatural purposes because it was described without fixation of type species (Stock 1971, García-París et al 2023). Dahl (1958) reserved Neogammarus for Gammarus festai Ruffo, 1937, but as expressed in article 67.5 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN 1999, García-París et al 2023), this action does not constitute a designation of type species, and Neogammarus Dahl, 1958 is thus not an available name. Neogammarus was subsequently made available by Karaman (1969: p. 57; 1971: p. 206) who designated Gammarus rhipidiophorus Catta, 1878 as its type species.I've sorted out the taxonomy template for this taxon so that Template:Automatic taxobox displays correctly, but this nomenclatural kerfuffle should be explained in the body of the article to avoid confusion - simply saying it was described by Ruffo is somewhat misleading. Neogammarus is a genus of amphipods[2] described by S. Ruffo (Italian zoologist and taxonomost, fl. 1937) in 1937.[3][4][5][6]
Taxonomy
[edit]Neogammarus was originally described by Ruffo in 1937, but a type species was not designated, which made it an unavailable name. The name remained unavailable until Gammarus rhipidiophorus was designated as the type species in 1969. The same species was also designated as the type species of the genus Rhipidogammarus in 1971. That these two genera had the same type species made them objective taxonomic synonyms. Consequently, Rhipidogammarus was synonymised to Neogammarus in 2023.[6]
Species
[edit]Neogammarus contains the following species:[1]
- Neogammarus adriaticus Karaman, 1973
- Neogammarus gordankaramani (Özbek & Sket, 2020)
- Neogammarus karamani (Stock, 1971)
- Neogammarus rhipidiophorus (Catta, 1878)
