Nate Hodges (born 1984) is an American professional timbersports competitor. He won the STIHL Timbersports Individual World Championship in 2024[1] and the U.S. championship in 2024 and 2025.[2] In 2025, he set a world record of 4.28 seconds in the Hot Saw discipline.[2]
Early life
[edit]Hodges grew up in North Fork, California, in Madera County.[1] His family has a long involvement in the Mid-Sierra Loggers Jamboree; his father Patrick, mother Cathey, brother Jerry, and sister Amanda have also competed in the event.[3]
Hodges began competing at the Jamboree as a young adult, entering the axe throw. He tied for first place in his first competition and won a tiebreaker throw-off.[4]
Career
[edit]Hodges entered the STIHL Timbersports national circuit in 2019. That July, he finished second at the U.S. Pro Championship in Milwaukee, one point behind Cassidy Scheer.[3] Later that year, he competed for the United States at the World Championships in Prague.[5]
In 2022, Hodges was part of the U.S. team that won the silver medal at the Team World Championship in Gothenburg, Sweden.[6] He won another team silver medal at the 2024 World Championships in Toulouse, France.[7]
Hodges won his first U.S. championship in July 2024, defeating Matt Cogar by one point.[8] The victory qualified him for the Individual World Championship in Toulouse, where he scored 67 points to win the title ahead of Jack Jordan of New Zealand and Ben Cumberland of Canada.[9]
In July 2025, Hodges won his second consecutive U.S. championship. During the semifinals, he set a world record of 4.28 seconds in the Hot Saw discipline.[2] He finished sixth while defending his title at the 2025 Individual World Championship in Milan, after being disqualified in the Hot Saw for cutting outside the marked line.[10]
In 2026, Hodges finished second at the North American Trophy and was runner-up to Matt Cogar at the U.S. Men's Pro Championship in Milwaukee.[11][12]
Personal life
[edit]Hodges lives near North Fork, California, and has worked as a general contractor.[4] In 2019, he opened Yosemite Axe Throwing in Oakhurst, California.[13]
