    NH3 Clean Energy Limited (ASX: NH3)[1] is an Australian public company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, formerly known as Hexagon Energy Materials. The company is developing the WAH2 clean ammonia project in the Maitland Industrial Area, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. [2] The project is due to commence production in 2029, with Phase 1 production of 650,000 tonnes per year growing to 1,300,000 tonnes per year in Phase 2. [3] The project targets two primary markets: power generation in Japan and South Korea, and marine bunkering for bulk carriers operating on the Western Australia–East Asia iron ore shipping corridor. In June 2025, the company announced a joint development agreement with the Pilbara Ports Authority and Oceania Marine Energy to develop low-emissions ammonia bunkering operations at the Port of Dampier by 2030. [4] This operation will service bulk carriers operating on the corridor, named by an industry consortium including BHP and Rio Tinto as the 'Iron Ore Green Corridor', a priority route for zero-emission shipping.     Power generation

    Japan and Korea are among the leading countries in transitioning away from fossil fuels through the use of clean ammonia. [6]

    In March 2024, JERA and IHI Corporation announced that the world's first large-scale demonstration substituting fuel ammonia for coal at a large-scale commercial coal-fired power plant would begin in late March at the Hekinan Thermal Power Station in Hekinan City, Aichi Prefecture.[7]

    The WAH2 project is intended to supply low-emissions ammonia to power generation markets in Japan and South Korea to aid decarbonisation.

    Ammonia bunkering

    The Pilbara Ports (Dampier, Port Hedland, and Ashburton) to Asia shipping corridor is one of the busiest shipping routes in the world, with over 775 million tonnes of cargo throughput in the 2024–25 financial year. [8]

    In June 2025, NH3 Clean Energy signed a joint development agreement with The Pilbara Ports Authority and Oceania Marine Energy to develop a clean ammonia bunkering hub in the Pilbara by 2030. This was followed in October 2025, at a signing ceremony hosted by WA State Premier Roger Cook, where NH3 signed a memorandum of understanding with Mitsui OSK Lines, making MOL the first shipping company to participate in the Pilbara clean ammonia bunkering initiative.[9]

    The WAH2 project is also intended to support broader initiatives to lower GHG emissions from shipping, including the Australian Federal Government's Maritime Emissions Reduction National Action Plan (MERNAP)[10]and the International Maritime Organisation's net zero framework.[11]

    Clean ammonia demand

    As reported by a 2024 BloombergNEF analysis, clean ammonia supply could grow between 22 and 30 times its current capacity during the 2020s, potentially reaching up to 32 million metric tonnes by 2030.[12] The International Energy Agency has projected that near-zero-emission technologies could reach nearly 70% of total production by 2050, up from less than 1% today.[13] The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) projected that 183 million tons per year of renewable ammonia, equivalent to global current ammonia production, would be required for maritime fuel by 2050.[14]

    Project development

    In November 2024, NH3 Clean Energy (then known as Hexagon Energy Materials) reached an agreement with Chevron Australia Ltd for the indication of gas supply to the planned WAH2 Project.[15] The following month, in December 2024, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Australian Gas Infrastructure Group regarding CO2 transportation infrastructure for the WAH2 Project.[16]

    On 5 June 2025, NH3 Clean Energy signed a memorandum of understanding with the Angel Carbon Capture and Storage Project, operated by Woodside Energy, regarding carbon sequestration services for the WAH2 Project.[17] Later that month, on 10 June 2025, the company signed a joint development agreement with the Pilbara Ports Authority and Oceania Marine Energy to develop low-emissions ammonia bunkering operations in the Pilbara region.[18][19]

    On 7 October 2025, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines signed a memorandum of understanding with NH3 Clean Energy and Oceania Marine Energy regarding the development of clean ammonia bunkering operations in the Pilbara region.[20] Later that month, on 28 October 2025, the Western Australian Government confirmed approval of the WAH2 Project for facilitation support under the Lead Agency Framework.[21]

    On December 8th 2025, NH3 Clean Energy signed a memorandum of understanding with Itochu Corporation regarding the development of clean ammonia bunkering operations across the Asia-Pacific region.[22]

    In April 2026, the company announced that Linde plc had been selected to deliver the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) for the WAH2 Project.[23]
