NEDIS (Russian: НЕДИС, from непрерывно-дискретный, "continuous–discrete") is a combined continuous and discrete-event simulation programming language developed at the V. M. Glushkov Institute of Cybernetics in Kyiv beginning in 1969. Its principal author was the Soviet and Ukrainian computer scientist Vladislav Gusev; the work was jointly led by Gusev and T. P. Maryanovich.[1] A later reworking of the system around adaptive grammars, NEDIS-90, was created in 1991–1993.[1]
History
[edit]NEDIS grew out of the Institute of Cybernetics' work on general-purpose simulation languages under V. M. Glushkov. It followed the earlier discrete-event language SLANG, developed by L. A. Kalinichenko and others,[2] and drew on the Simula 67 object model and on the library environments and "procedurisation of expressions" (closures) of ALGOL 68.[1] The first implementation was written in assembly language for the BESM-6 and completed by 1974.[1]
A distinctive feature of NEDIS was the ability to instantiate continuous blocks—objects whose behaviour is described by ordinary differential equations—dynamically, on the same footing as ordinary objects.[3] An early international survey of combined continuous/discrete simulation software reviewed NEDIS among systems of its kind.[3]
The system was documented in a two-part programming manual[4] and in a monograph on continuous–discrete simulation software.[5] Its application was described in the journal Kibernetika in comparison with the American language GASP-IV.[6]
NEDIS-90
[edit]By the late 1980s Gusev generalised the system into NEDIS-90, a technological programming system based on adaptive grammars and intended for the rapid construction of domain-specific languages, with simulation becoming one of several library contexts. It was implemented for the IBM PC AT/386 in 1991–1993.[1] The design of its compiler—splitting the source-language grammar into a set of subgrammars amenable to classical parsing methods—was described in Cybernetics and Systems Analysis.[7]
Reception
[edit]NEDIS was used at a number of Soviet research and design institutes for the simulation of complex technical systems.[1] In 1986 the collective that developed these simulation tools, including Gusev, received the USSR State Prize in science and technology.[1]
